Rockstar’s GTA V manual documents a display ranging from one to five stars. The stars are a visible indicator of police interest: more stars mean a higher wanted level. This description applies to GTA V; it should not be treated as a universal rule for every game in the Grand Theft Auto series.

How to deal with police attention in GTA Online
Rockstar’s GTA Online starter tips give two practical options: call Lester to remove a wanted level for a fee, or try using tunnels to evade police. These are Online-specific suggestions, not a full account of how police searches work in every GTA V mode.
Lester’s removal fee: a historical price, not a current quote
Rockstar’s Title Update 1.06 notes recorded a GTA Online fee of GTA$200 per star for removing a wanted level through Lester. That is a price documented in a 2013 update, not a verified current fee; check the in-game option for the amount available to your character now.

What is established about searches and escalation
The cited official material does not describe a complete GTA V police-search sequence, including search areas, line of sight, last-known location, or cooldown timing. It also does not support a reliable chart of the police units or tactics used at each of the five star levels. The manual establishes what the display means, while Rockstar update notes provide a few specific Online examples—not a full escalation guide.
Specific GTA Online unlock thresholds
Rockstar’s Title Update 1.68 notes tie two vehicle unlock conditions to wanted levels: surviving a three-star wanted level for five minutes makes an unmarked cruiser available for purchase, while the Police Riot unlock follows naturally losing a four- or five-star wanted level. These are unlock requirements, not descriptions of the police response at those levels.

Wanted levels in GTA Online creator activities
Some Online activities let creators define how wanted levels affect play. Rockstar’s Race Creator guide says enabling the Wanted Level option allows police to chase race participants. Separately, Rockstar’s Title Update 1.72 notes, dated January 27, 2026, report that Wanted Level Options were added to the Mission Creator. These are creator-setting examples; they do not establish every rule for standard Story Mode or Freemode.
