Start with the game’s documented modding route, then check the exact project page, file, update, and author history before downloading. A familiar platform or popular creator is not a safety guarantee: platform scans and moderation help, but they have limits. If the download route, file contents, or requested permissions do not match what the mod claims to do, stop and verify rather than running it.
1. Find the mod through a route the game recognizes
Check the game developer’s documentation or official modding support first. If it points to a community platform, open the project there directly and use its own download controls. Avoid unfamiliar mirrors, unsolicited download links, and unexpected off-site installers. Microsoft recommends downloading software from trusted sources and keeping security protection current: Protect your PC from unwanted software.
A community platform gives you information to assess—the project page, file version, requirements, and any moderation signals—but being hosted there does not guarantee that a particular download is safe.
2. Check the project page and the author’s history
Before downloading, look for a clear explanation of what the mod changes, its dependencies, known conflicts, and a changelog that describes recent updates. Read recent comments for reports of suspicious behavior, broken functionality, or a sudden change in the project. CurseForge’s moderation policy requires clear functional information and changelogs for updates: Moderation Policies.

Look at the author profile for a consistent history of work and communication. Nexus Mods’ submission rules require authors to verify claims on their pages and prohibit misleading or harmful submissions: File Submission Guidelines. These checks help you judge the page, but a complete profile or detailed description does not prove who controls the account. Popularity, endorsements, account age, and time available are context—not guarantees—and an established account can still be compromised.
3. Inspect the exact file and download route
Confirm that the selected file matches the game version and mod version you intend to use. Check that its name and description match the project page, and that the download does not unexpectedly send you to an unrelated installer, launcher, or credential-entry page. Be especially cautious if you are asked to run a password-protected archive, disable security protections, or provide account details. Stop and verify through the platform’s support route or an author channel you already trust.

Nexus Mods’ submission guidelines prohibit harmful files and set rules for external download links and files that connect to the internet to download or send information. Such network behavior is prohibited unless crucial to the mod or utility’s function; an unexplained request to connect is a reason to pause and investigate, not proof by itself that a file is malicious. Do not work around a quarantine or review status by searching for the same file on an unfamiliar mirror.
4. Interpret platform security signals carefully

In the Files tab, Nexus Mods displays security indicators for files. Its Virus Scanning at Nexus Mods help article, last updated December 31, 2024, describes these signals:

- A white checkmark can indicate a very old file uploaded before stricter security checks were introduced. Do not read it as evidence that the file passed every newer check.
- A yellow question mark means scanning is ongoing, and the file is unavailable to download while that happens.
- A red cross means the file failed checks or received a significant number of VirusTotal positives and needs moderator review. Nexus says that a red cross alone does not establish that the file is malicious.
Nexus Mods says uploaded content goes through multiple security checks and a virus-scan process. The same help article describes older files that may not have been checked under newer controls and notes that antivirus tools can produce false positives for mod behavior. Treat these as platform statements, not an independent guarantee; consider the specific file’s status alongside its page, update, and credible reports.
CurseForge moderation signals
CurseForge says most new file clusters normally go through manual moderation. A whitelisted project skips that manual step for new file clusters, but files still receive automated technical checks for malicious code, integrity, and similar concerns. Whitelisting is project-specific and depends on its history; it does not mean every release is individually hand-reviewed or risk-free. See Project Whitelisting: How trusted projects skip moderation.

These platforms describe their own processes; the available information does not provide an independent head-to-head security audit or establish how common malicious mods are overall. Avoid treating download counts or platform status as a prevalence measure.

- Keep your operating system, browser, and antivirus protection updated. Microsoft’s guidance on trusted downloads and current protection is at Protect your PC from unwanted software.
- On Windows 11, Smart App Control can block untrusted or unsigned applications. Do not turn off protections merely to run an unexplained mod installer; Microsoft describes the feature in its Smart App Control support page.
- If an installer unexpectedly requests administrator access, stop unless the reason is clear and the publisher and source are independently credible. Microsoft explains how User Account Control limits the ability of apps to run with administrator privileges: How User Account Control works.
- Before installing a major mod or pack, preserve your saves so you can recover if the installation is incompatible or breaks the game. No particular backup utility is required by the guidance here.
If a security product warns about a download, do not assume it is definitely infected or definitely a false positive. Check the exact file and source, review its platform status, and consider what the alert says. If you cannot resolve the concern, do not run the file; use your security product’s scanning and reporting workflow, and report rule-breaking content through the platform. Nexus Mods encourages users to report content that violates its rules.
