1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhile driving, you can choose an in-game radio station through the vehicle radio controls; in Grand Theft Auto V, the available radio-wheel and quick-change actions depend on your platform and version, so check the game’s Controls settings rather than relying on one universal button combination. On PC, GTAV and GTA Online also offer Self Radio, which plays eligible music files you add to the game’s User Music folder.
What the vehicle radio does
GTA’s vehicle radio is a selectable listening feature: while in a vehicle, you choose a station using the controls for the game and platform you are playing. In GTAV, the game-help material describes both a radio wheel and a quick-change action. Those are ways to choose or change what you hear, not evidence of a single control scheme shared by every GTA game, platform, or input device.

The official GTAV game-help page does not provide a fully legible set of button glyphs for every platform in the material available here. For your exact setup, open the game’s Controls settings and look for the vehicle-radio actions. A controller mapping may differ from a keyboard mapping, and controls can differ between titles and versions. Do not assume that a key or button listed for one game works in another.

They do not document the complete technical design of GTA’s audio system, nor do they establish a series-wide rule for whether music continues after you leave a vehicle. Those details should not be inferred from the station-selection instructions.

Change the station in GTAV
- Check your active control mapping. Open the game’s Controls settings and find the vehicle-radio controls for your platform and input device.
- Use the radio wheel or quick-change action shown for your setup. The GTAV game-help material identifies both interactions, but the control mapping should be taken from the game rather than generalized across platforms.
- Select the station you want. The in-game radio is organized around station selection. If your input does not bring up the wheel or change the station as expected, return to Controls and confirm the action assigned to your current device.
This procedure is deliberately tied to the controls displayed by your own game. A guide for another GTA installment or platform may describe a different input, and an older key mapping is not a reliable substitute for the current in-game settings.
Radio wheel or quick-change: which should you use?
The two interactions described in GTAV serve the same broad purpose—choosing or changing what plays—but the game-help material does not spell out every platform’s button sequence. Use the wheel when you want to choose deliberately from the available station selection, if that interaction is available in your setup; use the quick-change action when you want to move between stations without relying on a universal key or button listed by an outside guide. The exact action names and mapping can vary with platform, version, and input device, so the Controls menu is the dependable reference.
If the radio seems to ignore an input, first make sure you are using the mapping for the active device. A keyboard guide will not necessarily describe the same action as a controller guide, and instructions for San Andreas should not be treated as instructions for GTAV. Rockstar’s separate San Andreas PC troubleshooting page, for example, names Insert and Delete for that game’s station switching; those keys are not established as GTAV-wide controls.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Play your own music with Self Radio on PC
Rockstar supports Self Radio for GTAV and GTA Online on PC. It is a custom-music station: you supply supported audio files, the game scans for them, and you choose how they are played through the Audio settings. Rockstar’s instructions specify non-DRM MP3, WMA, or M4A files. A protected file does not meet the stated requirement.
This is different from switching among the game’s regular stations. Standard stations are selected through the vehicle-radio controls; Self Radio is a PC feature that depends on music files you add and have the game scan. The documented Self Radio process is specifically for GTAV and GTA Online on PC. It does not establish a matching setup for consoles or other GTA titles.

1. Add eligible music files
- Place non-DRM MP3, WMA, or M4A files in
Documents/Rockstar Games/GTA V/User Music. The folder name isUser Music. - If your music is stored elsewhere, Rockstar says you can place shortcuts to the music folders in the User Music directory instead of copying the files there.
These are Rockstar’s documented file types and location for the PC Self Radio workflow. The instructions do not establish support for other file formats, protected tracks, or a custom-music setup on consoles, so do not assume that a method for PC applies to another platform. If a track does not appear, check that it is in one of the specified formats, is not DRM-protected, and is in the folder or linked folder Rockstar describes.
The documented steps do not call for buying a separate radio device or subscribing to an audio service. They do require access to GTAV or GTA Online on PC and eligible audio files you can place in the specified location. Rockstar’s instructions do not promise that every track from every source will work; the stated format and non-DRM conditions are the relevant requirements.
2. Scan the music folder
Rockstar says the game can scan automatically at startup. You can also start a scan yourself from Settings > Audio, choosing either Quick Scan or Full Scan. If a newly added track is not available, use one of those scan options from that menu.
Scanning is the step that lets the game find eligible tracks in the User Music location. If the game still does not list a file after a scan, recheck the folder path and file requirements, then run a Quick Scan or Full Scan again. Rockstar documents both scan choices but does not describe a guaranteed fix for every missing-track case.
3. Choose a playback mode
Self Radio offers three modes. The differences matter if you want a predictable order, random playback, or the feel of a regular in-game station.

- Grand Theft Auto V blends storytelling and gameplay in new ways as players repeatedly jump in and out of the lives of the game's three lead characters, playing all sides of the game's interwoven story.
- Grand Theft Auto V also comes with Grand Theft Auto Online, the dynamic and ever-evolving Grand Theft Auto universe for multiple players.
| Mode | How it plays tracks | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Sequential | Plays tracks in folder order. | Use this when you want playback to follow the listed order rather than randomize tracks. |
| Shuffle | Plays tracks randomly. | Use this for randomized playback without the described radio-host interruptions. |
| Radio | Plays tracks randomly with radio adverts and DJ banter between tracks. | Song skipping is disabled in this mode, according to Rockstar’s description. |
Rockstar’s support page describes Radio mode as playing audio files randomly with adverts and DJ banter between tracks, and says songs cannot be skipped in that mode. If skipping is important, choose a different Self Radio mode rather than treating the restriction as a general rule for every station.
In practical terms, Sequential is the choice when you want the folder’s order to matter; Shuffle changes that order randomly; Radio trades skipping for interruptions that resemble a regular broadcast. These are playback choices within Self Radio, not separate music libraries. The support description does not specify further controls for arranging tracks beyond folder order or guarantee that every operating-system file ordering will look the same.
Why the station lineup can change
A station list is version-sensitive, particularly in GTA Online. Rockstar’s GTAV Title Update 1.52 notes record stations and changes added in December 2020: one entry lists Still Slipping Los Santos and The Music Locker, while another lists K.U.L.T 99.1 FM and Still Slipping Los Santos and notes updates to Worldwide FM and FlyLo FM. These dated notes demonstrate that the lineup has changed; they are not a complete list of stations available in the current game.
For a specific title or online version, check its in-game station selection rather than relying on a list published for a different update. The notes identify PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in the update title, but the cited December 2020 changes should not be mistaken for a current inventory across all platforms or editions. The page was last updated December 18, 2023, while the station changes it records are dated December 2020; those dates describe different things and should not be conflated.
When comparing station availability, compare like with like: the game title and edition, the platform or input device, whether you mean standard in-game stations or PC Self Radio, and the game’s update state. A list that mixes those categories can make a station appear missing when the underlying comparison is between different versions or between built-in stations and user-supplied music.

If vehicle radio music is missing in San Andreas on PC
Rockstar documents a particular audio-routing problem for the PC version of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. When the computer uses a surround speaker configuration of 5.1 or more, vehicle radio music may be routed to the center speaker. With only two speakers, Rockstar says there may be no channel through which the music can be heard. This is a San Andreas PC troubleshooting case, not a general explanation for radio problems in every GTA game.
- Confirm that a radio station is selected. Rockstar’s support instructions specifically include this check.
- Set the PC speaker configuration to match the speakers actually attached to the computer.
- In the support context for San Andreas on PC, use Insert or Delete to switch radio stations.
The speaker detail matters: the support page describes music being routed to a center speaker in a 5.1-or-higher setup, and a possible lack of an audible channel on a two-speaker system. Rockstar’s proposed check is to make the computer’s speaker configuration match the connected speakers and ensure that a station is selected. This is a narrowly documented case, not proof that other silent-radio problems have the same cause.
If these steps do not match your game or platform, do not apply the San Andreas key instructions or surround-sound explanation as if they were universal. Check the relevant title’s controls and audio settings instead. Rockstar’s support page for this issue was last updated April 14, 2024.

Why is a new Self Radio song not appearing?
Check that the file is MP3, WMA, or M4A and is not DRM-protected, and verify that it is in the User Music folder or a linked folder. The game can scan at startup; you can also run a Quick Scan or Full Scan from Settings > Audio.
Can you skip songs in Self Radio?
Rockstar says song skipping is disabled in Radio mode, which also plays tracks randomly with adverts and DJ banter. Sequential and Shuffle are the other documented modes; the no-skip restriction is specific to Radio mode.
Why can’t I hear the car radio in San Andreas on PC?
Rockstar describes a specific speaker-routing issue: with 5.1-or-higher surround sound, radio music may go to the center speaker, and with two speakers there may be no channel for it. Confirm a station is selected and set the PC speaker configuration to match the attached speakers. This guidance is for San Andreas on PC, not every GTA game.
