As of October 13, 2026, Nintendo lists three classic Star Fox games for the original Nintendo Switch: Star Fox (Super NES), Star Fox 2, and Star Fox 64. Switch 2 can access those classics and adds Star Fox Adventures through Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics, as well as the new 2026 game simply titled Star Fox. The subscription tier required depends on which classic you want to play.
Which Star Fox games can you play on each Switch?
Nintendo’s US and UK catalogs list the following games and access routes. “Nintendo Switch” can refer to either the original console or Switch 2, so the distinction matters: the GameCube classic and the new 2026 release are listed for Switch 2, not the original Switch.

The Super NES games are in the Super NES – Nintendo Classics library, which is part of Nintendo Switch Online. Star Fox 64 is in the Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics library; Nintendo places that library in Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. Nintendo’s support information says an active membership is required for access to the classic libraries.

In practical terms, if you only want the Super NES entries, the standard Nintendo Switch Online membership provides the relevant library. To play Star Fox 64 through Nintendo Classics, you need Expansion Pack access. A subscription grants access through the relevant classics app; these games are not sold individually through those apps.
Switch 2 also supports the earlier Nintendo Classics libraries, and its Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics library is the route for Star Fox Adventures. The GameCube library is identified by Nintendo as playable exclusively on Switch 2. Check the catalog and membership details for your own region before subscribing, since Nintendo’s listings and terms are region-specific.

What is the new 2026 Star Fox game?
The separate game titled Star Fox is not the Super NES original or a re-release of Star Fox 64. Nintendo lists it as a Switch 2 exclusive, with a release date of June 25, 2026. Its description presents it as a cinematic take on the Star Fox 64 story, with a visual overhaul and new fully voiced dialogue.

Which version should you choose?
- For the Super NES games: Look for Star Fox and Star Fox 2 in the Super NES – Nintendo Classics library. These are available on both Switch generations through Nintendo Switch Online.
- For the Nintendo 64 game: Choose Star Fox 64 in Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics. This route requires Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack.
- For the GameCube entry: Star Fox Adventures is the Switch 2 option, through Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics.
- For the 2026 release: The new game titled Star Fox is listed for Switch 2 only.
A Nintendo 64-style controller is optional for the N64 classics. Nintendo says it is not required, so you can play Star Fox 64 without buying that accessory.
