Unsynced with higher-level players, it is much more approachable for following the story. The answer depends on how you enter and which group you have; the Binding Coil is also distinct from the much harder Unending Coil of Bahamut (Ultimate).
Which Bahamut raid are you asking about?
“The Coils” usually means the original level 50, eight-player Binding Coil series from A Realm Reborn, including the Binding, Second, and Final Coil. It is optional content and does not appear in roulettes, so a routine Duty Finder queue is not a reliable way to find a party. A community guide places the synced series between Extreme trials and Savage raids, but that is a practical comparison rather than an official current difficulty ranking. The Balance’s Coils guide also notes that the series lacks the later raids’ story mode.
Do not confuse it with The Unending Coil of Bahamut (Ultimate), usually called UCoB. Square Enix describes the Ultimate series, introduced in patch 4.11, as a new difficulty tier intended to challenge hardcore players. That description applies to the separate Ultimate encounter, not to the original Binding Coil series. Square Enix’s retrospective on Ultimate raids explains that distinction.
How difficult is it under each setup?
| Setup | What to expect | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Unsynced, with higher-level players | Much easier than the intended level 50 challenge; some mechanics may still matter. The community guide recommends this for players mainly interested in the story. | Seeing the narrative without learning every old raid mechanic. |
| Standard level sync | You play under level sync and should expect mechanics and coordination beyond routine story content. Arrange a pre-made group rather than relying on a roulette queue. | Players who want to experience the series closer to its intended level range. |
| Minimum Item Level and Silence Echo | These settings add challenge for a pre-made group, but modern job changes mean they do not exactly reproduce the original on-patch difficulty, according to the community guide. | Groups looking for a tougher synced run. |
Here, “unsynced” means entering with the unrestricted-party option so higher-level characters can use their actual levels rather than being reduced by level sync. It lowers the intended challenge, but does not guarantee that every mechanic can be ignored. The community guide recommends this route for story-focused players and a pre-made group for synced clears.

What the official rules say about synced Turn 5
Turn 5 illustrates why “synced” does not necessarily mean the untouched original tuning. The official duty database lists it as a level 50 duty, level-synced on entry, with an average item-level requirement of 82, Echo applied by default, and a 90-minute time limit. The official Turn 5 duty listing gives those entry details.
Square Enix’s patch 2.3 notes say the Binding Coil Echo takes effect on entry and raises maximum HP, damage dealt, and healing magic potency by 20%; it does not apply in Turn 3. That historical adjustment, alongside later job changes, is why current synced play should not be treated as a perfect recreation of the earliest version. The patch 2.3 notes document the Echo change.

How to choose your route
- For the story: Ask in Party Finder for an unsynced group with a higher-level player. The Coils do not appear in roulettes, so do not count on Duty Finder to assemble a party.
- For the synced challenge: Arrange a pre-made party and agree beforehand whether to use standard sync or add Minimum Item Level and Silence Echo.
- If you meant UCoB: Treat it as a separate Ultimate fight, not as another name for the original Coils. Its difficulty tier was created for players seeking a greater challenge.
Party availability and the difficulty a group experiences vary with its members, settings, and job choices. The sources do not establish a representative clear time, failure rate, or numerical difficulty score, so a more precise universal rating would be misleading.
