Why the answer depends on your world
Check three things before choosing a method: whether you play Java or Bedrock, your game version, and whether Villager Trade Rebalance is enabled. The rebalance was described as experimental in Mojang’s Minecraft 1.20.30 Bedrock release notes, which said players had to turn on the experiment to test the changed trades. Those notes do not establish the exact rules in every later release.
- Ordinary trades: the librarian’s enchanted-book offer is randomized. You may have to try repeatedly to find Unbreaking III; no fixed number of attempts is guaranteed. The Minecraft Wiki’s trading reference describes standard book offers as randomized.
- Rebalance experiment: the biome matters. Mojang’s Minecraft Preview 1.20.30.20 notes list Unbreaking among the special books associated with jungle librarians.
- Trade history: cycling a workstation is a common way to seek a different offer while trades remain untraded. Once you trade with the librarian, its trades are locked, so do not expect workstation changes to reroll them.
How to try for it with ordinary trades
- Confirm that your world is using ordinary trades rather than the Villager Trade Rebalance experiment.
- Check the offers of an untraded librarian. If the book is not Unbreaking III, change its workstation setup to seek a different offer, then check again. Exact behavior can depend on your edition, version, and setup.
- Repeat only while the librarian’s trades are still untraded. Trading to lock an offer ends the rerolling opportunity for that villager.
- When the librarian offers Unbreaking III, trade for the book. Use an anvil to apply it to eligible equipment.
Do not plan around a promised number of lectern resets or a precise chance: the available references do not establish a version-specific probability or expected attempt count.
How the experimental biome rules change the search
If Villager Trade Rebalance is enabled in your world, follow the biome rules rather than assuming ordinary random offers apply. Mojang’s 1.20.30.20 preview associates Unbreaking with jungle librarians. Because this is preview-era information, confirm the rules for your specific edition and version; it does not prove that every later release uses the same experimental settings.

What the book does
