On PC or Mac, open Game Options > Other, then turn on Enable Custom Content and Mods to use mods or turn it off to disable them. Relaunch The Sims 4 for the change to take effect. If you are checking the game after an update, exit without saving while mods are disabled.
Enable mods in The Sims 4
- Start The Sims 4.
- Open Game Options and select Other.
- Check Enable Custom Content and Mods.
- If a mod includes script files and does not load, also check Script Mods Allowed. This separate toggle is described in an EA Forums community information post; EA’s official installation guide documents the general mods and custom content toggle.
- Exit and relaunch the game.
EA’s mod installation instructions say mods should then be available in-game.
Disable mods
Go to Game Options > Other, uncheck Enable Custom Content and Mods, then exit and relaunch the game. The general setting disables mods and custom content. Script mods have the separate Script Mods Allowed option noted in the EA Forums community post.
Turn mods back on safely after an update
EA may disable mods after a game update because changes to the game can cause previously working mods to create problems. Before turning them on again, follow EA’s update guidance:
#1 Best Overall
- Requires The Sims 4 & all game updates. For PC, see minimum system requirements for the pack.
- Create Vampires
- Unleash Supernatural Powers
- Escape to Forgotten Hollow
- Live the Immortal Life
- Leave mods disabled and launch the game. Check it in Live Mode.
- Choose Exit Game without saving. EA warns that saving and exiting while custom content and mods are disabled may remove content from the save.
- Check the mod creator’s site for compatibility with the current game update. If a mod is outdated, replace or update it as the creator directs.
- Turn mods back on under Game Options > Other.
- Relaunch and test. If a problem appears, remove the mod causing it and check with its creator for an updated version.
Creators may need time to update their mods after a patch, so a game update does not mean every mod is immediately compatible.
Find a mod that is causing problems
If The Sims 4 develops problems after you enable mods, EA recommends removing mods and testing the game again. Start with gameplay-changing Game Mods before custom content, since EA identifies them as more likely to cause issues.

- Develop Parenting Skills – Level up your Sim’s parenting skills to satisfy their child’s needs and influence their behaviors. Gain new abilities through experience and choosing when to discipline bad actions, encourage good behavior, or just let kids be kids.
- Shape Your Sim’s Childhood – The decisions you make influence how your Sim parents and leave a lasting impact on their child’s future. Each choice shapes their personality, affects their traits, influences their family relationships, and guides their path into adulthood.
- Gather your Sim’s family to participate in new activities and spend quality time with each other. Sims of all ages can work together to complete a variety of school projects, express their creativity using construction blocks, or volunteer their time for good.
- Customize your Sims’ looks and their home with new family fashion and build items. Give the kids’ bedrooms extra personality, remodel the kitchen to feel homier, and let your Sims express their sporty or artistic sides with new outfits.
- Remove a batch of mods and test the game.
- If the problem disappears, split that batch in half and test again.
- Keep splitting the group that contains the problem until you identify the mod.
- When contacting the creator, include the game version shown in the lower-left corner of the Main Menu.
EA also notes that many mods can affect performance by using additional memory and CPU resources, though it does not set a limit on how many players may install.

EA says mods are available on PC and Mac, not PlayStation or Xbox. It distinguishes Custom Content (CC), such as player-made hair, clothing, or furniture, from Game Mods, which add features or change game functionality. Game Mods may include script code, but not all do.
