Luck is useful in Fallout: New Vegas, but it is not essential for every character. It adds critical-hit chance and a small amount to every skill, improves casino outcomes, and opens a few Luck-gated interactions. Prioritize it if you want a critical-focused build or plan to gamble; otherwise, treat it as one useful SPECIAL stat rather than a universal must-have.
What Luck does
Luck has several distinct effects: it contributes to critical chance, raises all skills modestly, affects casino games, and qualifies you for a small number of specific interactions. These benefits work differently, so the best investment depends on what you want your character to do.

How much Luck matters in combat
Each point of Luck contributes 1 percentage point of critical chance, according to the critical-chance mechanics reference. Luck above 10 does not add to this Luck-based contribution. This is only one part of critical chance: other modifiers, including perks, traits, weapons, and circumstances, can also affect it. Higher Luck therefore helps a critical-focused character, but does not guarantee frequent critical hits on its own.
Luck can also help meet the requirement for the Better Criticals perk. The Luck mechanics reference lists Luck 6, Perception 6, and level 16 as prerequisites, so Luck alone is not enough to unlock the perk.

Does Luck affect skills and skill checks?
Luck gives a small increase to every skill. The Luck reference’s skill table shows an increase of one skill point per two Luck points. That broad bonus can help round out a character, but it does not turn a failed skill check into a probability roll.
As the New Vegas skill-check reference explains, checks use score thresholds: your relevant skill either meets the required value or it does not. Luck can contribute to the score, but it does not give you a random chance to pass when you remain below the threshold.
Does Luck help with gambling?
Yes. The official Fallout: New Vegas PC manual says, “Outcomes are affected by your Luck stat,” and notes that “Payout rules vary from casino to casino throughout the wasteland.”
Rank #2
- Feel the Heat in New Vegas: Not even nuclear fallout could slow the hustle of Sin City. Explore the vast expanses of the desert wastelands from the small towns dotting the Mojave Wasteland to the bright lights of the New Vegas strip
- Feuding Factions, Colorful Characters and a Host of Hostiles : A war is brewing between rival factions with consequences that will change the lives of all the inhabitants of New Vegas
- New Systems : Enjoy new additions to Fallout: Special melee combat moves have been added to bring new meaning to the phrase "up close and personal"
- An Arsenal of Shiny New Guns : With double the amount of weapons found in Fallout 3, you'll have more than enough new and exciting ways to deal with the threats of the wasteland and the locals
- Let it Ride : In a huge, open world with unlimited options you can see the sights, choose sides, or go it alone. Peacemaker or Hard Case, House Rules, or the Wild Card, it's all in how you play the game
The mechanics reference says Luck 6 can begin to influence roulette and slot-machine outcomes, though not reliably, while Luck 7 is needed for more regular favorable results and begins to influence blackjack. Treat those as mechanics guidance, not guaranteed win rates: the manual does not publish exact probabilities by Luck score or game, and the reference cautions that slots and roulette can still lose on most plays.

Luck also opens a few specific dialogue or interaction options. The Luck mechanics reference gives these examples:
- Luck 7: a code-phrase interaction with the mobile facial-recognition scanner at REPCONN headquarters.
- Luck 9: an option in the “Et Tumor, Brute?” quest concerning Caesar’s brain tumor.
These are narrow exceptions, not evidence that Luck replaces skill requirements throughout the game.
Rank #3
- Beyond the Wasteland: The world of New Vegas is more expansive than ever. Each new distinct area presents a fresh set of branching-quests, remarkable personalities and more chances to play the Savior or the Pariah to the natives of New Vegas.
- Dead Money: Lured into a trap masquerading as the Sierra Madre Casino, you are thrown into a high stakes game where you'll have to work with three other lost souls if you want to survive.
- Honest Hearts: An expedition into Utah's Zion National Park goes horribly wrong and you become embroiled in a war between tribes and put into a conflict between a New Canaanite missionary and the mysterious Burning Man.
- Old World Blues: Transported to the Big MT research crater, you are enlisted by the Think Tank to save them from their own science experiments that have gone horribly out of control.
- Lonesome Road: Ulysses, the original Courier Six, contacts you and promises to answer why he refused to deliver the Platinum Chip at the start of Fallout: New Vegas, but only if you make one last journey into the treacherous canyons of the Divide.
Should you invest in Luck?
Choose Luck according to your main goal rather than following a universal SPECIAL allocation:
- Critical-focused combat: Luck directly contributes to critical chance, and Luck 6 is one requirement for Better Criticals.
- Casino play: Luck improves outcomes, although casino rules vary and the available official manual does not provide exact odds.
- Broad skill coverage: Luck adds a modest amount to all skills, which can help with score-based checks but will not bypass their thresholds.
- Specific quest options: Higher Luck can qualify you for a few documented interactions, including the examples above.
If none of those goals matters to your build, Luck can be a lower priority than the SPECIAL stats tied to your chosen weapons, skills, and perks. Its value is real, but it is spread across several benefits rather than being mandatory for every play style.
