How Leveling Works in Oblivion Remastered

Use skills to build progress, sleep when the bronze icon appears, then assign 12 Virtue Points. Here’s how Remastered leveling differs from the original game.

In The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, using skills builds level progress, but your character does not gain the level until you sleep in a bed. When the bronze level-ready icon appears in the top-right corner, sleep to apply the level and assign its 12 Virtue Points. Major Skills contribute to level progress faster than Minor Skills, and enemies scale with your character level—so keep your skill growth aligned with the combat, magic, and stealth abilities you want to rely on.

How to level up

  1. Use skills. Skills improve through their associated actions. Bethesda gives Blade, Alchemy, and Sneak as examples; Major Skills contribute to character levels faster than Minor Skills. Bethesda Support explains the Remastered leveling system.
  2. Watch for the bronze icon. The icon in the top-right corner indicates that you are ready to level up.
  3. Sleep in a bed. Skill progress alone does not apply the character level. Find a bed and sleep; if you have built up enough progress for multiple levels, you can take several in a row. Bethesda does not specify a universal minimum sleep duration. Bethesda’s gameplay tips also state that skill experience does not become a level increase until after sleep.
  4. Assign Virtue Points. Each level gives you 12 points to distribute among attributes.

How Virtue Points work

At each level-up, you may put up to five Virtue Points into one attribute and raise no more than three different attributes. Choose attributes based on the capabilities you want to strengthen rather than spreading points automatically.

Attribute Effects described in Bethesda’s Remastered guide
Strength Melee damage and carrying capacity
Intelligence Total Magicka
Willpower Magicka regeneration and magic resistance
Agility Dodging and ranged accuracy
Speed Movement speed
Endurance Health and fatigue recovery
Personality NPC reactions and persuasion
Luck Not described in Bethesda’s Remastered support summary; PC Gamer’s June 2, 2026 attribute guide says it slightly improves most skill values except Acrobatics and Athletics.

Attribute effects can be described differently across guides. For example, PC Gamer’s June 2, 2026 guide also associates Strength with maximum health and unarmed damage, and describes Agility and Endurance effects beyond Bethesda’s support summary. Treat those expanded descriptions as secondary-guide coverage rather than replacing the official summary.

Which actions improve skills?

Progress comes from using the skill through its associated action. Bethesda’s gameplay tips mention running and jumping to improve Acrobatics and Athletics, and repeatedly casting certain spells to improve the relevant skills. Other examples come from PC Gamer’s April 25, 2025 skill guide: striking with a weapon improves its matching weapon skill, blocking improves Block, taking hits while wearing armor improves that armor skill, and picking locks improves Security. That guide lists the skill ranks as Novice, Apprentice, Journeyman, Expert, and Master.

Why to balance skill growth with your build

Character level affects the enemies you face. Bethesda warns that enemies scale with your level and advises developing a mix of combat, magic, and stealth skills. If you push up noncombat skills such as Mercantile without also improving the abilities you use to fight, you may reach a higher character level without the tools to handle its encounters.

Plan level growth around the build you actually play: train the combat, magic, or stealth skills you depend on, then spend Virtue Points on attributes that support those strengths. Major Skills advance character-level progress faster, so selecting and using them has a stronger effect on how quickly levels arrive.

How Remastered differs from the original Oblivion

Do not apply the original game’s level-counting rules to Remastered. Bethesda’s Remastered support describes Major and Minor Skills contributing to experience, with Major Skills contributing faster, and a fixed 12 Virtue Points at each level. The original game’s support page instead describes ten total Major Skill increases as the level trigger; the original manual describes attribute bonuses based on skills increased during that level cycle.

Question Oblivion Remastered Original Oblivion
What advances character level? Major and Minor Skills contribute experience; Major Skills contribute faster. (Bethesda Support: Remastered leveling) Bethesda Support describes ten total Major Skill increases as the level trigger. (Original-game leveling)
How are attribute increases awarded? 12 Virtue Points per level, with up to five assigned to one attribute and increases to no more than three attributes. (Bethesda Support: Remastered leveling) Attribute bonuses depended on skills increased during the level cycle. (Original-game support; original manual)
How do you apply a pending level? Sleep in a bed. (Bethesda Support: Remastered leveling) Original-game support also describes sleeping to level, but its skill-counting rule is different. (Original-game support)

Older guides that tell you to count ten Major Skill increases or optimize attribute multipliers for the original system can therefore give the wrong instructions for Remastered.
