In Windows, a Focus session reduces notification distractions; it does not disable your keyboard or mouse. The phrase “focus mode” can also mean keyboard focus inside an app, or a separate display setting in Windows Terminal. Those features work differently, so the right steps depend on which one you mean.
Three different meanings of “focus” in Windows

What a Windows Focus session does
Microsoft describes Focus as a way to temporarily block notifications, sounds, and alerts from apps and contacts. A session can display a timer, turn on Do not disturb, hide taskbar badges, and suppress flashing taskbar app indicators. It does not close apps or lock out your input devices.
To configure a session, open Settings > System > Focus. You can choose its duration and options there. Start a session from Settings, the notification area, or the Clock app; the documented sessions workflow depends on Clock. You can end a session early.
One setting can outlast the session: if Do not disturb was already on before you started, it remains on when the session ends. Microsoft’s Focus guidance describes these notification and taskbar behaviors.

How keyboard focus works in an app
Keyboard focus is about which control in the current app will respond to a keyboard action—not about suppressing notifications. Pressing Tab typically moves focus forward through interactive controls, while Shift+Tab moves backward. Some apps also support directional keys for moving focus. Enter or Space can activate a focused control when that control and app support it.
A mouse follows a different path: point to an item and select it directly. Keyboard navigation instead depends on which controls are focusable and the order the app presents them in. That order should be logical and predictable; static images do not need to be included unless they require interaction. Exact key behavior varies by app.

If you use a keyboard without a mouse, turning on a Windows Focus session will not change an app’s tab order or make unsupported controls keyboard-accessible. The app itself needs to provide keyboard interaction and a usable focus sequence. Microsoft’s keyboard interaction guidance explains how focus navigation works for Windows app interfaces.

Terminal’s Focus mode is a presentation option, separate from the Windows Focus session. It hides the title bar and tabs; it does not change the system’s notification settings.

- In Windows Terminal, press Ctrl+Shift+P to open the command palette.
- Search for focus mode and choose Toggle focus mode.
- To use a shortcut instead, configure a keybinding in Terminal Settings. Microsoft gives Ctrl+F12 as an example.
- To start Terminal this way, open Settings > Startup and choose Focus or Maximized focus.
