How Linux Compatibility Layers Let Steam Deck Play Games from Other Stores

Proton can run some Windows games on SteamOS, while a launcher such as Heroic handles access to supported external libraries. Here is how the pieces fit together—and where compatibility can fail.

Yes: some games from outside Steam can run on Steam Deck. The key is to separate two jobs: a storefront tool gets a game from the account where it was purchased, while a compatibility layer such as Proton helps its Windows version run on SteamOS, which is based on Linux. Steam Deck supports adding non-Steam applications to Steam, but neither Proton nor a launcher guarantees that a particular game will work.

What Proton does—and what it does not do

Steam Deck runs SteamOS, a Linux-based operating system. Many PC games are built for Windows, so they cannot necessarily run on the Deck in the same way they do on a Windows PC. Proton is Valve’s compatibility layer for running Windows games on Linux. Valve describes it as modified Wine combined with graphics API implementations; Proton also translates DirectX graphics calls to Vulkan.

A compatibility layer is not a storefront. It does not provide a game catalog, log in to a store account, download a purchase, or transfer a license into Steam. It addresses the operating-system and graphics compatibility work involved in running a Windows build. The game still has to be obtained through a store or other legitimate installation route, and its publisher’s requirements still apply.

That distinction explains why “Can Proton run games that are not on Steam?” and “How do I install a game I own elsewhere?” are different questions. Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ says applications outside Steam can work with Proton and be usable on the Deck. In practice, the application first needs to be installed and made accessible to Steam; then a compatible runtime path may let it run. The answer is conditional on the specific game and its dependencies, not simply on whether it appears in Steam’s store.

How a third-party launcher fits into the process

For certain other game libraries, a launcher can handle account access and installation. Heroic Games Launcher is an open-source project for Linux, Windows, and macOS. Its project documentation lists support for Epic Games Store, GOG, and Amazon Games. It is a third-party route to those libraries—not a Valve guarantee, and not itself the compatibility layer.

Heroic’s project documentation describes using different components to communicate with the supported stores. Its Linux guide then describes installing games, selecting a compatibility tool, and adding installed games to Steam. This creates a chain of separate pieces: the store account supplies access to a game; the launcher helps install and manage it; Proton or another compatible tool attempts to run its Windows version; and Steam’s interface can provide a convenient way to launch it in Game Mode.

These pieces should not be conflated. A successful store login does not establish that the game launches. A game appearing in Steam does not mean Valve has reviewed or certified that installation route. And a compatibility layer does not override a publisher’s account, DRM, anti-cheat, or operating-system rules.

Which route is relevant?

Need Relevant component What it establishes
Run a Windows game on SteamOS Proton or another compatible Wine-based tool A compatibility path for the Windows application; not access to a store account or a promise that the game works.
Access and install a game from a supported external library Heroic, for the stores listed in its project documentation: Epic Games Store, GOG, and Amazon Games A third-party launcher route for those accounts and installations; not proof that every game in those libraries runs.
Launch an installed game from Steam’s interface Steam’s non-Steam application support A way to add an application to Steam’s library and, as Heroic’s guide describes, make installed games available in Game Mode.
Know whether a title has passed Valve’s Deck review Valve’s compatibility badge A summary of Valve’s review of the game’s Deck experience, not a certification of every third-party launcher setup.

The evidence for Heroic’s store coverage does not establish that the same setup applies to every storefront or launcher. Other libraries may need different tools and procedures. Check the documentation for the specific launcher rather than assuming a method for one account will work for another.

Install and launch a supported-library game with Heroic

Heroic’s Linux quick-start guide describes a general sequence for installing through its supported stores and adding a game to Steam. The guide is version-sensitive: labels, available compatibility tools, and the exact screens may change. Follow its current instructions for the installed version rather than relying on a fixed set of menu names.

  1. Install Heroic. Use a software manager and, when following the guide’s Flatpak route, check that the Flatpak version is selected. The guide is the authority for the current installation method and interface.
  2. Sign in to the relevant account. Log in to the Epic Games Store, GOG, or Amazon Games account that owns or otherwise provides access to the game. The account and its entitlements remain with that store.
  3. Choose a compatibility tool if the game needs one. Heroic’s guide describes using Wine Manager to download a Proton-GE version. The available choices and names can change; use the guide’s current steps instead of assuming every title needs the same tool or version.
  4. Install the game through Heroic. Select a game available in the signed-in library and follow the launcher’s installation flow. Installation is a separate stage from proving that the title will launch successfully.
  5. Add it to Steam for Game Mode if desired. Heroic’s guide describes adding newly installed games to Steam, where they can appear under the Non-Steam tab. This provides a Steam interface entry; it does not change the game’s store, compatibility status, or publisher requirements.
  6. Test the actual play experience. Launch the game on the Deck and check whether it reaches gameplay and whether its controls, text entry, and display behavior are usable. A successful install alone does not answer those questions.

This is a cautious overview, not a hardware-tested guarantee. Exact steps vary by Heroic version and title. Consult Heroic’s current Linux quick-start guide for labels and instructions, and use the relevant store or publisher documentation for account-specific or game-specific requirements.

Why a game can still fail

Proton support continues to evolve, and Valve’s documentation identifies several areas that can create compatibility problems or delays. A title may depend on software or services that do not work as expected in a Linux environment, even when the main game files install normally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Anti-cheat: Valve says Easy Anti-Cheat and BattlEye can be supported, but enablement or configuration by the game or service vendor is required. It is inaccurate to assume that every anti-cheat game works—or that none can work.
  • DRM and anti-tamper: These protections can interfere with compatibility. A store login or successful download does not guarantee that the game’s checks will accept the setup.
  • Launchers and frameworks: Some pre-game launchers, including .NET/WPF-based ones, can be problematic. Valve identifies launcher frameworks as a potential source of issues; a game may therefore fail before its main content starts.
  • Media Foundation: Valve lists it among areas that can cause compatibility problems. A failure affecting a game feature that relies on media components may not be solved by changing storefront settings.
  • Publisher policy: Heroic warns that some games may ban users for running them through Wine or Proton on an unsupported operating system. Check the publisher’s rules before proceeding when account penalties are a concern.

These are title-specific risks, not a checklist that predicts failure in every game. The reviewed information does not provide an authoritative, current compatibility audit for every Epic, GOG, or Amazon title installed through Heroic, nor does it support a general success percentage. Look up the particular game and its current dependencies and policies.

How to interpret Steam Deck compatibility badges

Valve’s Verified, Playable, Unsupported, and Unknown labels describe the results of Valve’s Deck compatibility review. They are useful signals about the experience Valve reviewed, but they should not be read as a pass or fail certificate for every route through a third-party launcher.

  • Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
  • Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
  • Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
  • Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
  • The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
Badge Valve’s stated meaning How to use it when installing outside Steam
Verified The checks pass without user configuration for full functionality. Helpful evidence about Valve’s reviewed Deck experience; it does not establish that the external store, launcher, or a separate installation configuration will behave identically.
Playable The game functions but may require manual steps. Expect that some setup or adjustment may be needed, and consult the game’s current requirements.
Unsupported Valve found incompatibility with Proton or specific device components. Treat it as a warning about the reviewed Deck experience, not as a prediction that changing storefronts will fix the underlying issue.
Unknown No review result is available. There is no Valve review outcome to rely on; seek current title-specific information and test cautiously.

A badge answers a narrower question than “Will my copy, installed with this launcher and these settings, work?” Valve’s review and a third-party launcher setup are not the same configuration. For an external-library purchase, check the badge where available, then consider the launcher, publisher requirements, and the game’s own behavior.

A practical pre-install check

Before spending time on a large download or risking an account restriction, work through the checks that can change the decision:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check the title’s current Deck status. Note whether it is Verified, Playable, Unsupported, or Unknown, and interpret the result as Valve’s review rather than a guarantee for Heroic.
  2. Identify required dependencies. Look for anti-cheat, DRM, a required launcher, or other components that run before gameplay. These are more informative than the storefront label alone.
  3. Read the current launcher guidance. Confirm that the launcher supports the store and review its current setup instructions. Heroic’s documented coverage is Epic Games Store, GOG, and Amazon Games.
  4. Check publisher policy. If the publisher treats Wine or Proton as an unsupported operating system, determine whether using it can put the account at risk before signing in or launching.
  5. Consider the controls and interface. Valve’s Deck guidance emphasizes full controller access, on-screen keyboard support where text entry is needed, and avoiding required pre-game launchers where possible. These details affect usability even when the game starts.

What to troubleshoot when the game does not work

Use the point of failure to decide what to check next; changing compatibility versions at random can obscure whether the problem is installation, account access, a dependency, or controls.

  • The game is not listed in the launcher: Confirm that the correct store account is signed in and that it has access to the game. This is an account or library issue, not evidence about Proton.
  • The game installs but will not start: Check current game and launcher documentation for required DRM, anti-cheat, launcher frameworks, or publisher restrictions. Confirm that the compatibility tool is configured according to the current launcher guide.
  • A required pre-game window blocks progress: Consider whether the launcher depends on a framework Valve identifies as potentially problematic. The game may be blocked before its main executable runs.
  • The game starts but is awkward to use: Assess controller navigation, text entry, and display behavior separately from basic launch success. Valve’s usability guidance treats these as part of a functional Deck experience.
  • You are considering another compatibility version: Follow the launcher’s current guidance and check title-specific information. A different version may be worth evaluating, but the available documentation does not establish a universal fix or best version for all games.

The useful rule of thumb

Think of playing a game from another store on Steam Deck as a sequence of independent requirements: you need valid access through the store, a way to install and launch the game, a compatibility path for its Windows components, and a usable Deck control experience that complies with publisher rules. Heroic can help with the first launcher steps for its documented stores; Proton addresses compatibility; Steam’s interface can make an installed title easier to launch. Success at one stage does not prove success at the next.
