When you press the button, the mouse or its companion software sends that assigned input; the game can use it only if its controls support or accept the input. Extra side buttons do not have one universal meaning across games.
What “programming” a mouse button means
A programmable button is a physical switch whose action can be changed in the mouse maker’s configuration software or, on supported models, saved to the mouse’s onboard memory. Instead of sending only its default mouse event, a button can be set to perform another available action. Logitech’s software documentation, for example, lists mouse functions, keystrokes, multikey macros, media controls, hotkeys, shortcuts and other assignments. The options depend on the model and its software; that list is not a specification for every gaming mouse.

Three kinds of assignment are useful to distinguish:
- Mouse-function assignment: The button sends a mouse function made available by the device or software. What a game does with that input depends on its control system.
- Key or key-combination assignment: The button sends a keyboard input instead. For example, if a game lets you bind an action to a particular keyboard key, you can assign that same key to a mouse button and then use either control.
- Macro assignment: The button sends a configured sequence of events, such as mouse events and keystrokes. A macro can include delays or repeat behavior where the particular software and mode support them.
A remap is generally a replacement input: one press produces the assigned function or key. A macro is a sequence, so it may produce several events from one press. That difference matters when setting up controls and when checking what the software can store or repeat.

How a button press reaches the game
The practical path is: you configure an assignment, the configured mouse button is pressed, the mouse or companion software exposes the assigned input, the operating system processes it, and the game’s input layer handles what it supports. This is a conceptual description rather than a universal technical implementation: hardware, configuration software and game input systems vary.
Microsoft’s Win32 mouse-input documentation describes two common extra buttons as XBUTTON1 and XBUTTON2 and notes that applications often use them for functions such as browser navigation. Microsoft Learn states: “The XBUTTON1 and XBUTTON2 buttons are often located on the sides of the mouse, near the base.” Their presence does not mean a particular game will assign them a particular action. The game’s own controls determine whether and how a mouse input can be bound.

Microsoft’s GameInput documentation explains that a HID device’s report descriptor defines the buttons, switches and axes exposed through that interface. In practical terms, the game can respond only to inputs made available to it and handled by its input system. If a game does not offer a binding for a side-button input, assigning that button as a keyboard key may be an alternative when the game allows that key to be bound. It is not a guarantee: the game must accept the resulting input and its control settings must match.
Software profiles and onboard memory are different
Configuration software can manage settings on the computer, including profiles associated with particular games or applications on supported models. Alternatively, a supported mouse may store some settings in onboard memory. These approaches should not be treated as interchangeable: a feature available in one mode may be unavailable in another.

| Configuration approach | Where settings are managed | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Desktop-software profile | The companion software on the computer selects or manages the configuration. Logitech’s G600 documentation describes Automatic Game Detection and separate assignments for applications. | Confirm that the right profile is selected and, for a game-specific profile, that the game application is associated with it. Per-application behavior depends on the software and model. |
| Onboard memory | On supported models, assignments and other settings can be written to the mouse. Logitech says the documented G600 assignments and DPI settings can be used on another computer without additional software or configuration. | Check that the exact assignment you need is supported in onboard mode. Logitech’s G600 documentation says application-specific profiles do not work in onboard-memory mode. |
The table describes documented Logitech examples, not universal behavior. Logitech’s G502 support article also describes assigning a mouse function, keystroke or multikey macro in that model’s onboard configuration. It discusses DPI and report-rate settings as well. These model-specific examples show what some mice can do; they do not establish that another model stores the same settings or macro features.
Logitech’s documentation refers to Logitech Gaming Software and includes older G600 and G502 workflows. Software labels and support can change, so use the instructions for the exact mouse and currently supported software rather than assuming that another model has the same menus or capabilities.

How to assign a button for a game
The exact labels and screens vary, but this sequence covers the main decisions without assuming one manufacturer’s interface.
- Open the mouse maker’s supported configuration software. Check that it recognizes the mouse before changing assignments. If it does not, verify that the software is intended for that model and that you are using a supported configuration path.
- Choose the profile you intend to use. Select the default profile for a general assignment, or create or select a game-specific profile if both the mouse and software support application profiles. In a profile-based setup, confirm that the correct game application is associated with the profile.
- Select the physical button. Identify the side or other extra button you want to change in the software’s mouse diagram or button list. Check the selected button before saving; changing a neighboring button can lead to a confusing in-game result.
- Choose the type of assignment. Pick a mouse function, a keyboard key or combination, or a macro if that option is available. For a keyboard remap, choose a key that the game can bind. For a macro, inspect the event sequence and any available delay or repeat options rather than assuming one press will behave like a simple remap.
- Bind the corresponding input in the game. Open the game’s controls settings and assign the received mouse input or keyboard key to the intended action, where the game permits it. If the game sees a key rather than a side-button event, bind the key you assigned in the mouse software.
- Test in a low-risk setting. Try the button in a menu, training area or other safe environment. Confirm that the intended action occurs once or in the intended sequence before relying on it during play.
- Save or write the configuration as required. Some configurations are managed by software profiles; supported onboard settings may need to be written to the mouse. If you expect the assignment to work on another computer without the companion software, verify that this exact assignment is stored and usable onboard.
This is a practical synthesis of the documented Logitech configuration model, not a claim that all mouse software uses the same menu names or save procedure.

Macros: sequences, delays and mode limits
A macro is not merely another name for a remapped button. It is a sequence that can include mouse events and keystrokes. Logitech’s macro documentation describes event delays and repeat options, but their availability depends on the software mode: for the documented software, repeat options are unavailable in onboard-memory mode. Do not infer from a software’s desktop-mode macro editor that the same repeat behavior will be available after storing a profile on the mouse.
Before using a macro, check three things: whether the mouse software offers the events you need, whether the selected configuration mode supports the relevant timing or repeat options, and whether the game permits the resulting input. The available documentation does not establish the rules for every game or anti-cheat system. Consult the specific game’s rules and the mouse maker’s instructions if macro use is a concern; do not assume a configuration is allowed or disallowed across all games.
Troubleshooting when the button does not work
- The button does nothing in the game: Check whether the game accepts the input type you assigned. If you assigned a mouse function, see whether the game offers that mouse input in its controls. If you used a keyboard remap, bind that key in the game and check that the correct profile is active.
- The wrong action occurs: Verify which physical button you selected in the software, which assignment it received and which input the game has bound. Side-button names and in-game labels need not correspond to a particular action by default.
- The assignment works in one game but not another: Check whether the software selected a different profile for the second application and whether its executable is associated with the intended profile. Logitech’s G600 documentation describes application-specific profiles, but that feature is not available in its onboard-memory mode.
- A macro behaves differently after switching modes: Compare the software-profile and onboard-memory feature sets for the exact model. Logitech documents repeat options that are unavailable in onboard-memory mode for its documented software; other models may differ.
- The assignment fails on another computer: Confirm that the model stores the needed setting onboard and that the setting was written to the mouse. Logitech describes the G600’s stored assignments and DPI settings as usable on another computer without additional software or configuration, but that statement should not be generalized to every model or every macro feature.
- The software does not offer the expected option: Check the model-specific documentation and the supported software version. A feature shown in instructions for a G600 or G502 does not prove it exists on a different mouse.
What to check if choosing a mouse for programmable buttons
If you want this capability, compare the particular models on the controls and configuration features that matter to your games—not just the number of buttons. A programmable gaming mouse is a useful category term, but the category alone does not establish a given model’s behavior.

- Profile handling: Find out whether assignments can be selected per game or application, and whether that depends on desktop software running or being configured.
- Onboard storage: Verify which settings the mouse actually stores and whether they remain available on another computer without companion software.
- Macro behavior: Check which event types, delay controls and repeat options work in each mode. Do not assume the full desktop-software feature set is stored onboard.
- Game and operating-system compatibility: Confirm that your game can bind the input you plan to send and that the mouse’s configuration software supports your computer’s operating system.
Logitech’s G600 and G502 documentation provides examples of programmable assignments and onboard configuration, but it does not establish current stock, prices or the behavior of every retail listing or software version. Check the exact model documentation and game controls before relying on a particular feature.
