There is no universal expiration period established for every unused Xbox Game Pass subscription code. Microsoft’s general redemption instructions explain how to redeem a code but do not set a general deadline. Check the specific code and its offer terms: promotions may have a redeem-by date or eligibility limits.
What determines whether a Game Pass code is still valid?
The terms attached to the particular code matter. Check the card or package, the email that delivered it, the retailer’s listing, and any promotion terms for a “redeem by” date, eligible plan, membership restrictions, or regional limits. Microsoft’s code redemption instructions describe signing in and entering or pasting a code or token, but do not give a universal expiration period for Game Pass subscription codes.
A Microsoft-hosted community Q&A about buying an Ultimate code from Amazon includes an independent advisor’s answer that Ultimate codes do not expire. That is community guidance, not a formal Microsoft policy covering every code, seller, promotion, or region. If the terms do not show a deadline, ask the seller or Microsoft Support about that specific code rather than assuming it will remain redeemable indefinitely. Read the community Q&A.
Promotional codes can have deadlines and eligibility rules
Promotional offers may be more restrictive than a standard retail subscription code. For example, a Microsoft Community answer reproduced terms for an NVIDIA PC Game Pass promotion: “Redeem at microsoft.com/redeem by 8/30/24. Valid for new Xbox Game Pass members only.” That deadline was August 30, 2024, so it is a historical example—not a current offer or a general Game Pass rule. See the Microsoft Community response.

Do not confuse subscription codes with gift cards or developer promo codes
Similar-looking Microsoft or Xbox codes can add different things to an account, and their terms are not interchangeable.

- Microsoft account balance gift card: Microsoft says non-promotional account balance does not expire; promotional balance is subject to the promotion’s terms. This rule concerns account balance, not an unused Game Pass subscription code. Microsoft account balance information.
- Developer-issued Microsoft Store promotional code: Microsoft’s developer documentation says game promotional codes created through that program never expire, while codes for other apps or add-ons can have expiration dates. That policy applies to the developer program, not retail Game Pass subscription codes. Microsoft Store promotional-code documentation.
Can I wait until my current subscription ends?
Microsoft says a prepaid code can be used after an existing subscription expires. This explains when to add prepaid time; it does not guarantee that an unused code itself has no expiration date. Check the code’s own terms before delaying redemption. Microsoft’s prepaid-code and subscription guidance.

How to check a code before you rely on it
- Find the terms: Review the code card or package, delivery email, retailer listing, and linked promotion terms for a redeem-by date.
- Confirm eligibility: Check the plan, region, and any restrictions such as “new members only.”
- Identify the code type: Confirm whether it is subscription time, a gift card/account balance, or a separate promotional code.
- Ask about unclear terms: If no deadline is stated, contact the seller or Microsoft Support and ask about that specific code. The available general redemption instructions do not establish a universal lifespan.
- Redeem to the intended account: Follow Microsoft’s code redemption flow while signed in to the Microsoft account where you want the subscription applied.
