Blizzard has not disclosed a cumulative lifetime copy count for Diablo IV in the official figures available here. Its best-known launch numbers measure different things: more than $666 million in sales during the first five days, and a claim that the game sold through more units than any other Blizzard title at the same release stage. Neither states how many copies were sold.

The pre-launch and post-launch claims use different time windows and should not be combined into a single total. The first compares unit sales before launch; the second reports revenue over five post-launch days, alongside a separate fastest-selling characterization.

Why player totals and playtime do not answer the question
Activision Blizzard reported that more than 10 million players experienced Diablo IV in June 2023 and played over 700 million hours. Its 2023 year-in-review later reported 1.5 billion hours played by the first week of November. These are engagement measures, not copies sold or a count of purchasers. Players and copies are not interchangeable: a player count does not establish how many copies were purchased, and playtime measures activity rather than sales.

Why $666 million cannot be converted into copies
The first-five-day figure is revenue, not units. The announcement does not provide the complete mix of editions, regional prices, discounts, platform fees, or accounting basis needed to calculate a reliable copy count by dividing that amount by one assumed retail price. The company’s figure should therefore remain a dollar figure, not be presented as an estimated number of copies.
