How long is the physical game held?
GameStop’s help FAQ describes a 48-hour pickup window after the game’s release for an in-store pre-order. Once that window passes, the store may release the physical copy to another customer. The window is about the copy—not an immediate forfeiture of the deposit. GameStop says the deposit remains on the customer’s account after the pickup period. What happens to the reservation balance?
The balance has a separate deadline from the 48-hour hold on the physical copy. GameStop’s published terms say an in-store reservation not redeemed or cancelled within 30 days after the release date is automatically converted into a non-expiring digital gift card, redeemable only for GameStop merchandise. This is not the same as keeping the original game available for pickup: the copy may already have been released to another customer after the 48-hour window. Does the rule differ for online orders for store pickup?
Yes. GameStop treats in-store reservations and online pre-orders for pickup as different order types. Its terms say an online pickup reservation is made available at the designated store on the release date. If it was available by that date and is not picked up or cancelled within 30 days, the terms describe conversion to a non-expiring digital gift card for GameStop merchandise. The 48-hour in-store pre-order hold should not be assumed to apply to an online order; check the order record and the applicable terms.

What should you do if you can’t pick it up?

Check the release date and whether the reservation was placed in store or online for pickup; those details affect which policy applies.

Contact the GameStop store where you placed the in-store reservation as soon as possible. GameStop directs customers to that store for specific reservation details. Its published guidance does not guarantee an extension.

If you want to cancel rather than pick up the game, ask the store about the cancellation and refund options before the applicable deadline. GameStop’s FAQ says that within 30 days after release, a refund is made to the original payment method or in cash; after 30 days, it says the refund is store credit only. This FAQ wording concerns refund timing, while the published terms separately describe automatic gift-card conversion for an unredeemed or uncancelled reservation.
