There is no reliable, sourced completion-time estimate for The Legend of Zelda: Sands of Time. The title refers to a fan-made Nintendo 64 ROM hack, not a separately released Nintendo game, and the available listing and player comments do not establish an average, median, range, or representative number of hours. Any precise figure would be guesswork.
You can still identify the project, understand what the available evidence says about its scope, and measure your own playthrough consistently. That is more honest than borrowing a runtime from another Zelda game or from Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, which is a different title.

The short answer: a typical playtime has not been established
For this specific hack, no credible source reports how long a normal playthrough takes. The reviewed material contains no average, median, completion-time range, or representative sample of players. The most accurate answer is therefore unknown, rather than a number of hours.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThat does not mean the project is necessarily short or long. It means the evidence needed to make that judgment has not been published. A single player’s save file, a comment saying that a dungeon took a long time, or an informal video duration cannot support a general “hours to beat” claim. Treating an unsupported estimate as fact would mislead readers who are deciding whether to start the hack or planning time to finish it.

Which game does “Sands of Time” mean?
The exact title in this question is The Legend of Zelda – Sands of Time, a fan-made Nintendo 64 ROM hack credited to Debug log and Woon. Romhack Plaza identifies The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time as its base game. The project is listed in English, marked complete, and shown as version 1.22 with a release date of December 6, 2024. Those are project-page details, not a measured runtime, and they can change if the listing is updated.
The base-game reference also matters for setup. The listing names an Ocarina of Time (USA) .z64 filename. That describes the input expected by the patching process; it does not mean the hack is an official Nintendo release or that an ordinary Ocarina of Time cartridge automatically contains it.
It is not the 2003 Prince of Persia game
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is a separate Ubisoft game released in 2003. Nintendo’s third-party copyright listing treats that title separately from Zelda software. Runtime information for Prince of Persia cannot be transferred to this ROM hack, and a search result that discusses the Prince title is not evidence about the Nintendo 64 project.

What the listing establishes—and what it does not
| Detail | What is stated | What that means for playtime |
|---|---|---|
| Project name | The Legend of Zelda – Sands of Time | Identifies the hack being discussed; it is not a duration statistic. |
| Creator credit | Debug log and Woon | Provides attribution, not a completion benchmark. |
| Platform | Nintendo 64 | Indicates the target platform and likely technical constraints, but does not determine hours required. |
| Base game | The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time | Helps distinguish the hack from unrelated games; it does not prove that its content takes as long as Ocarina of Time. |
| Language | English | Useful for identifying the listing; language alone says nothing about duration. |
| Status | Complete | Means the project is presented as finished, not that a standard playthrough length has been measured. |
| Version | 1.22 | A release identifier, not a number of hours. |
| Release date | 2024-12-06 | Dates the listed release; it does not indicate how long players need to finish it. |
| Comments | Anecdotal reports of dungeons, exploration, bugs, patches and playthrough experiences | Shows that players have engaged with substantial content, but does not provide a representative sample or a reliable time range. |
Why no responsible hour estimate can be calculated
There is no measured player sample
A defensible “how long to beat” figure normally requires many comparable playthroughs, a clear definition of completion, and a method for handling outliers. The available material supplies none of those. It does not say how many players finished, whether their runs were first attempts, or whether times included exploration, resets, troubleshooting or optional objectives.
Comments are useful for scope, not statistics
The listing’s comments mention dungeon and exploration content and discuss bugs, patches and individual experiences. That can alert a prospective player to the kind of journey involved. It cannot establish a typical duration because comments are self-selected and anecdotal. One player may rush through familiar sections; another may search every area, get stuck on a puzzle, replay after a patch or spend time diagnosing an emulator issue.
“Complete” has a project meaning, not a player-time meaning
When a ROM-hack page marks a project complete, it generally describes development status: the published version is intended to contain its planned content. It does not promise that every bug is absent, that every player will reach the ending, or that the creator has recorded a standard completion time. Version 1.22 should therefore be read as the listed build, not as a prediction of the hours required.

How to measure your own playthrough
If you need a practical answer for your schedule, record your own run. The result will be personal rather than a community average, but it will be reproducible and clearly qualified.

- Define “beat” before starting. Decide whether you mean reaching the ending, completing the main route, or finishing all optional exploration you can find. Write the definition down so you do not change the target midway through the run.
- Record the exact build. Note that you are playing The Legend of Zelda – Sands of Time, version 1.22 if that is the build you obtained, along with your platform or emulator. If the project page later changes, another player can understand why your result may differ.
- Start a timer when active play begins. Do not include the time spent downloading, patching, reading setup notes or waiting at a menu. If you want a total project time as well, keep that as a separate figure.
- Pause the timer for non-play interruptions. Stop for meals, unrelated work, long technical troubleshooting and research. Keep short in-game pauses consistent; for example, either include ordinary menu navigation every time or exclude it every time.
- Log major interruptions. Record crashes, soft locks, emulator configuration changes and time spent applying a patch. These events can materially change elapsed time and are especially relevant because player comments discuss bugs and patches.
- Mark progress checkpoints. Note the date and active time when you reach major dungeons, major story gates or the ending. You do not need to publish sensitive puzzle solutions; the checkpoints simply show where time accumulated.
- Save the final result with its definition. Report active hours, build number, hardware or emulator, and what “beat” meant. A statement such as “I reached the ending in X active hours on version 1.22, excluding setup and troubleshooting” is far more useful than an unqualified number.
Use separate categories for different kinds of runs
| Category | Include | Why keep it separate |
|---|---|---|
| Active completion time | Time spent controlling the character, solving puzzles, exploring and fighting | Best approximation of the player’s direct experience. |
| Technical time | Patching, configuration, troubleshooting, crashes and recovery | Hardware and software problems vary widely and should not be mistaken for game content. |
| Optional-content time | Extra exploration, collectibles or side objectives you choose to pursue | Explains why two otherwise careful players can finish at different times. |
| Elapsed calendar time | All time from first launch to ending, including breaks | Useful for planning a personal schedule, but not comparable to active playtime. |
What can make two playthroughs differ?
The available comments already point to dungeons, exploration, bugs, patches and different playthrough experiences. Those observations explain why a single universal number would be especially weak. A player familiar with Ocarina of Time may navigate inherited controls or conventions quickly, while someone new to the base game’s design may spend longer learning its logic. Neither result is “the” runtime.
Route and exploration choices
Reaching the ending with a focused route is a different task from inspecting every room and revisiting areas after new abilities become available. Unless a source defines which objectives count, a range that combines both styles is not meaningful.

First attempt versus repeat attempt
Early attempts include time spent learning layouts, testing interactions and understanding puzzles. A repeat run can be shorter because the player remembers solutions. A published estimate should identify which kind of run it represents; no such classification is supplied for this hack.
Technical stability
Comments about bugs and patches indicate that technical events can affect an individual experience. A crash that costs ten minutes, or a patch that requires restarting from an earlier save, changes elapsed time without changing the underlying content. Logging those events makes a personal report interpretable.

Hardware, patching and ownership basics
The listing’s Ocarina of Time (USA) .z64 reference identifies a base image for the hack. It does not authorize downloading copyrighted game data, and it does not turn a physical cartridge into the hack. A physical Nintendo 64 cartridge of Ocarina of Time is related hardware, not the fan-made project itself.

Use only legally obtained software and follow the applicable laws in your region when creating a personal patch. Keep the original base image unchanged, apply the hack according to the project’s documented method, and verify that the resulting file matches the expected format before troubleshooting gameplay. Do not treat an unofficial download mirror as evidence of the project’s official version or status.
Why setup details belong in a time report
Different players may use original hardware, a flash cartridge or an emulator, and each setup can introduce different loading, save and troubleshooting behavior. Because no standardized test exists for this hack, reporting the environment is essential if you want another player to understand or reproduce your result.
How to read future playtime claims
If a guide, video description or forum post later gives an hour figure, check the claim before treating it as typical. Look for these details:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Does it identify The Legend of Zelda – Sands of Time rather than Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time or another Zelda game?
- Does it state the version, especially if it differs from the listed 1.22 release?
- Does it define completion as reaching the ending, finishing a main route or achieving full completion?
- Does it say whether the time is active play, uninterrupted elapsed time or a speedrun?
- Is it based on several comparable players, or only one person’s run?
- Does it account for bugs, patches, retries and technical interruptions?
Without those qualifications, the number may still describe that author’s experience, but it should not be presented as the game’s standard runtime.
What prospective players can conclude today
You can identify the project with reasonable confidence: it is the English, complete-listed Nintendo 64 hack based on Ocarina of Time, credited to Debug log and Woon, with version 1.22 and a December 6, 2024 listing date. Player comments indicate meaningful dungeon and exploration content and mention the possibility of bugs or patches. Those facts help you decide whether the project sounds interesting and whether to plan time for troubleshooting.
They do not answer the hours question. Until a transparent set of comparable playthroughs is published, the only accurate public answer is that a typical completion time is unavailable. Measure your own active time, state your definition of “beat,” and keep technical and optional-content time separate if you need a dependable personal schedule.
