The safest, most practical way to hide living-room gaming cables is to match the routing method to the cable type. Use a paintable surface raceway for a visible TV-to-console run, use a low-voltage in-wall grommet only for signal cables such as HDMI, and use a listed in-wall power-and-cable kit when you need to move TV power behind the wall. Never put an ordinary extension cord inside a wall, under a rug, through a doorway, or across a floor.
Start by mapping every connection—TV power, console power, HDMI, network, speakers, and controller charging leads—then choose the least invasive method that keeps plugs accessible, avoids trip hazards, and follows the product instructions and local electrical requirements.

Choose the hiding method before moving furniture
Different cables require different treatment. A short controller lead can be bundled under a table; a wall-mounted television may need a vertical run from the screen to a console; and a power cord has electrical restrictions that do not apply to HDMI or Ethernet. Decide whether you need concealment, permanent power, or simply better organization.
| Method | Best use | Visibility | Wall work | Cable types | Adding a cable later |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Surface raceway or cord cover | TV-to-console runs on an existing wall | Low after painting | None; surface mounting | Low-voltage leads and, only where the product is designed for it, power | Easy: remove the cover and add a lead |
| Low-voltage in-wall grommet | HDMI, Ethernet, coaxial and other signal cables | Nearly invisible | Cut openings and fish cables | Signal cables only | Moderate; leave a pull string and allow capacity |
| In-wall TV power-and-cable kit | Wall-mounted TV whose power must be relocated behind the screen | Nearly invisible | Cut openings; follow electrical instructions | Power plus supported HDMI, coaxial and Cat 5e cabling | Moderate; limited by the kit and wall access |
| Clips, sleeves and reusable ties | Controller charging leads and short console cables | Low around furniture | None | Short, low-voltage leads | Very easy |
| Additional permanent outlet | A setup that lacks a safe power point | Invisible once installed | Electrical installation | Household power at a code-compliant outlet | Easy at the outlet, but requires proper installation |
For most renters and anyone who wants a reversible project, begin with a surface raceway. For a remodel or a carefully planned wall-mounted installation, an in-wall solution can look cleaner, but it demands more checking and more wall access.

Plan the route and measure every cable
Inventory the connections
Write down each cable before disconnecting anything. Typical living-room gaming systems include the TV power cord, console power cord, HDMI from the console, a network cable, soundbar or receiver leads, external-drive cables, and one or more controller charging cords. Mark which leads must remain permanently connected and which are used only occasionally.
Choose the shortest sensible path
Keep the console close enough to the TV that HDMI and network cables do not need excessive slack. A straight vertical route is usually easier to conceal than a diagonal one. Follow the wall edge or baseboard rather than crossing a walking path. Leave a gentle service loop at the TV and console so a plug is not pulled tight when equipment is moved.
Check the wall and furniture
Measure the distance from the TV connection point to the console, including turns and a small allowance for slack. Check that a raceway will not interfere with doors, drawers, vents or baseboards. For any in-wall plan, identify studs, pipes, electrical wiring, insulation and fire-blocking before cutting. The available evidence does not establish one safe installation method for every wall construction or jurisdiction, so the chosen kit’s instructions and local rules control.
Surface raceway: the default solution for a TV-to-console run
A surface raceway is a channel mounted over the wall. It groups several leads, protects them from snagging and can make a long run visually blend into the wall. Wiremold’s paintable cord-cover range is designed to hide and organize TV wiring; selected covers can be cut to fit. The C30 product sheet dated October 2, 2025 lists a base and cover that can be cut to length and supplied wall screws and anchors.

Installation steps
- Test the system first. Connect the TV, console and accessories on the floor. Confirm that the picture, sound, network connection and controller charging work before concealing anything.
- Mark the route. Use a level to mark a straight line from the TV drop to the console. Keep the route out of doorways and walking lanes.
- Size the channel. Count the cables and compare their combined bulk with the raceway’s stated capacity. Do not force a cover closed or sharply bend an HDMI connector.
- Cut the raceway. Measure twice and cut the base and cover as directed. Deburr the ends so they cannot abrade a cable jacket.
- Mount the base. Use the supplied screws and anchors where appropriate for the wall. Do not nail or staple cords themselves to the wall or baseboard; Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) warns that this can damage the cord.
- Lay in the cables. Separate power and signal leads enough to avoid crushing plugs. Keep a little slack at both ends and avoid pinching cables behind the TV or console.
- Close and finish. Snap or fasten the cover, check that it is fully seated, then paint only if the manufacturer permits it and the paint is compatible with the cover.
- Retest. Turn on the TV and console, move the controller through its normal charging position and verify that no lead is strained.
How to make a raceway less noticeable
- Run it vertically or horizontally in line with the TV mount rather than at an angle.
- Use a paintable model and match the wall color after the adhesive or fasteners have cured, following the product directions.
- Align the raceway with a corner, trim line or furniture edge where possible.
- Leave the cover accessible instead of burying it behind permanently fixed furniture; future console upgrades are easier when the channel can be opened.
In-wall signal cables: use a low-voltage grommet correctly
A low-voltage grommet kit creates an upper opening behind the TV and a lower opening near the console. It is intended for signal wiring. Legrand identifies the CMK60 Wall Grommet Kit as a low-voltage product for cables such as HDMI. It is not a method for routing a television’s ordinary power cord.
When this approach fits
- The TV is wall-mounted and you want HDMI, Ethernet or coaxial cable out of sight.
- You can access both sides of the wall or safely fish the cable through the cavity.
- The cable can be replaced later, or you install a pull string for future upgrades.
Planning and installation sequence
- Confirm cable classification. Put only the low-voltage signal cables allowed by the kit in the cavity. Keep household power out of a low-voltage-only grommet.
- Locate obstructions. Use an appropriate stud finder and inspect for pipes and wiring. Do not cut until the planned openings are clear and the kit’s required clearances are met.
- Mark both openings. Place the upper opening behind the TV where connectors remain reachable and the lower opening near the console, not directly behind a shelf that will crush plugs.
- Cut the openings to the template. Follow the supplied dimensions rather than guessing. A loose opening can let the plate move; an oversized opening may not be covered.
- Fish the cables. Pull one cable at a time, protect connectors from sharp edges and leave service loops. A pull string makes later replacement possible without reopening the wall.
- Fit the grommets or plates. Secure each part exactly as directed and check that the cable jackets are not pinched.
- Test before final mounting. Verify video resolution, audio return, network link and any console-specific features before pushing the TV fully against the wall.
Do not assume that a product described as an “in-wall kit” handles power. Read the classification on the exact package and instructions. A low-voltage grommet and a power-rated kit are different product categories.
In-wall power-and-cable kits: a separate category
When the TV’s power must be available behind the screen, use a kit specifically designed for that purpose rather than hiding an extension cord. Legrand’s On-Q CPT306WV1 is described as an in-wall TV power and cable management kit that hides power along with HDMI, coaxial and Cat 5e cabling. Its product information lists ETLus and UL standard information. Those markings do not remove the need to follow the current instructions, verify compatibility with the wall and comply with local electrical requirements.

- Does the kit include a power inlet and outlet arrangement intended for the TV location, or is it only a pass-through for low-voltage wires?
- Which cable types and maximum quantities does the kit permit?
- Does the wall contain insulation, fire blocks, masonry or other obstacles that change the installation?
- Is the TV mount positioned so that plugs and the outlet remain accessible?
- Will local rules require a qualified electrician or a specific box, cable type or inspection?
If the instructions are unclear about power routing, stop and obtain qualified local electrical help. A hidden cord is not automatically a safe cord, and an unsuitable cable does not become acceptable because it is behind drywall.

Controller charging cables and console leads
Give charging leads a defined home
Keep one charging lead at the sofa or chair where controllers are used, and another at the console only if you genuinely need it. Route the lead along the rear edge of the table or cabinet, leaving the connector within easy reach. Small clips, sleeves and reusable ties can gather a short lead without drilling or cutting the wall. No particular clip or tie model has been established as superior, so choose an accessory sized for the cable and removable without damaging the furniture.
Bundle without crushing
Group cables loosely and use reusable ties rather than a tight knot. Do not bend a cable sharply at the controller port, HDMI plug or console power inlet. Keep USB charging leads separate from a bundle that must be moved frequently, so one person can unplug a controller without pulling the entire group.
Hide the console’s excess length
Coil surplus cable in a broad loop behind the console, not in a tight wad against a heat vent. Secure the loop to the furniture’s rear panel or place it in an open cable basket. Leave the console’s ventilation openings clear and make sure the power plug can be reached without dismantling the setup.

Power safety: what not to conceal
ESFI describes extension cords as temporary solutions, not substitutes for permanent household wiring. Its guidance says not to run them through walls, doorways, ceilings or floors, and not to place them where they will be pinched or become a walkway hazard. It also says not to nail or staple extension cords to walls or baseboards. Heavy reliance on extension cords may indicate that the room needs an additional permanent outlet.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s extension-cord business guidance, whose rule effective date is August 26, 2015, notes that cords missing applicable safety features—including minimum wire size, strain relief, polarization and continuity—can present shock or fire risks. The exact requirements vary by cord type, so inspect the cord and use it only as labeled.
Use this safety check
- Keep ordinary extension cords outside walls, ceilings, floors, rugs and doorways.
- Do not run a cord where furniture wheels, recliners or doors can pinch it.
- Do not staple, nail or screw through a cord or its jacket.
- Keep plugs and power strips ventilated and accessible.
- Replace a cord with cuts, crushed insulation, loose blades, damaged strain relief or overheating.
- Use a permanent outlet installation when the TV or console’s normal location has no suitable receptacle.
When adding an outlet is the better answer
If the console and TV constantly depend on extension cords, the cleanest long-term solution may be an additional outlet at the correct height. ESFI recommends installing additional outlets where needed. The available guidance does not provide one universal installation method for every home, so use qualified local electrical help for work that requires opening the electrical system, selecting wiring or obtaining an inspection.
An added outlet solves the power-location problem; it does not automatically route HDMI, Ethernet or controller leads. Pair it with a surface raceway or an approved low-voltage pathway for signal cables.

The raceway cover will not close
Too many cables, oversized connectors or a tight bend is usually the cause. Remove the cover, spread the cables, shorten unnecessary slack and compare the bundle with the product’s capacity. If it still will not close, use a larger channel rather than forcing it.

The TV loses signal after the cables are hidden
Open the route and test each cable directly. Look for a sharply bent HDMI connector, a cable pinched by the plate or a loose plug. If the direct connection works but the concealed path does not, replace the damaged or unsuitable cable before closing the route again.
A controller charges only intermittently
Inspect the USB plug and controller port, then test the lead without the bundle. A tight tie, furniture edge or repeated bending at the connector can interrupt charging. Reroute the lead with a gentle loop and keep its connector free of sideways strain.
The cord becomes warm or smells unusual
Disconnect it immediately and stop using it. Check for damage, an overloaded power strip, a crushed section or an unsuitable cord. Do not conceal or reuse a cord that shows heat damage; replace it with a correctly rated product and seek electrical help if the outlet or wiring is suspect.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThere is no clear path inside the wall
Do not improvise by drilling through unknown obstacles or pushing an extension cord into the cavity. Use a surface raceway, relocate the furniture, or have a qualified professional assess the wall and install an appropriate outlet or cable pathway.
Quick Recap
A practical decision guide
- Only short controller and console leads are visible: organize them with reusable ties, clips or a rear-panel cable basket.
- A wall-mounted TV needs HDMI or network cables hidden: use a surface raceway for reversibility or a low-voltage grommet such as the CMK60 for a properly planned in-wall signal route.
- The TV power cord must move behind the wall: choose an in-wall power-and-cable kit specifically rated for that purpose, such as the product category represented by CPT306WV1, and follow its instructions and local requirements.
- The room has no convenient receptacle: arrange a permanent outlet installation rather than extending a cord through a wall or walkway.
- You rent, expect frequent equipment changes or cannot inspect the wall: stay with surface-mounted organization and leave the cables accessible.
Final setup checklist
- Every cable is identified and has enough slack for normal equipment movement.
- Signal cables and power cables use products intended for their respective routes.
- No extension cord is inside a wall, under a rug, through a doorway or across a floor.
- Raceways are mounted without penetrating or pinching cables.
- In-wall openings and kits match the wall construction and the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Power plugs, outlets and connection points remain reachable for inspection and replacement.
- TV picture, audio, network, console power and controller charging have been tested after concealment.
