Its public reveal was on October 10, 2012, so as of October 8, 2026, that date was 13 years, 11 months, and 28 days ago. The game is still in alpha development, however; project age is not the same as time since a full release.
When did Star Citizen start?
Star Citizen’s development and crowdfunding began in October 2012. The public reveal took place on October 10, 2012, according to the official RSI stretch-goal timeline and Chris Roberts’s 2015 Letter from the Chairman. Roberts’s letter also records October 25, 2012, as the date the campaign reached its first funding goal.
Using the public reveal as the precise date anchor, Star Citizen had been around for 13 years, 11 months, and 28 days on October 8, 2026. That interval is a calendar calculation from the cited dates, rather than a figure published by the developer.
Why has development lasted so long?
In his 2015 letter, Roberts said the project had grown beyond his original expectations. He described an initial plan centered on a multiplayer dogfighting alpha and the single-player campaign Squadron 42. After backers exceeded the original funding target, he said the team expanded the scope and chose to release modules during development so players could see, test, and provide feedback on features as the larger universe was built.

That is Roberts’s explanation for the expanded project and staged development, not an independent accounting of every factor behind the timeline. He summed up the change by writing: “If you have followed Star Citizen from our kickoff in October, 2012, you know that the game we’re building today is a bigger and more technically accomplished project than I thought was possible back then.”
Is Star Citizen fully released?
No. The official RSI development hub, checked on October 8, 2026, listed Alpha 4.10.1 among the latest patch notes and showed 4.10.2 in PTU testing activity. That snapshot indicates ongoing alpha development; a PTU build is a public test environment, not a final release.

The cited official sources establish the 2012 campaign and the current alpha status in that dated snapshot, but they do not establish a current full-release date.
