How Loot Respawn Works in DayZ and How to Tune It

DayZ loot respawn is governed by the Central Economy. This guide explains nominal, min, restock, lifetime, storage caps, events.xml and safe tuning steps.

DayZ loot respawn is controlled by the Central Economy (CE). For individual items, the main settings are in types.xml; grouped encounters such as crash sites are managed in events.xml. To increase or slow supply, adjust an item’s target count and restock timing, then restart the server and verify the result. Storage caps, nearby players, malformed XML and uncertain min behavior can all make a change appear ineffective.

What actually controls loot respawn in DayZ?

The Central Economy is the system that decides when loot is created, counted and cleaned up. It works continuously rather than treating a server restart as a complete map refill. For a specific item, the principal tuning file is types.xml. That file describes how much of the item the economy should maintain, how quickly it may replace missing stock, how long untouched copies remain and whether stored copies count toward the cap.

events.xml handles a different class of spawn. It creates groups of objects, such as a crash site and its associated loot, instead of managing one item at a time. Event entries have their own nominal, min, lifetime and restock values, and their positions come from cfgeventspawns.xml. Changing an item entry in types.xml therefore will not directly change how often a grouped event appears.

How the Central Economy replaces an item

The exact internal algorithm is not fully documented in the material available for this guide, but the practical cycle is clear enough to tune safely:

  1. An item is removed, moved or destroyed. The economy tracks live copies and, depending on the entry’s flags, copies held in inventories, vehicles or storage.
  2. The economy compares stock with the entry’s target. nominal is consistently described as the target number the system tries to keep on the map.
  3. Caps and counting flags are checked. If the global cap has already been reached, items hidden in bases, containers or other counted storage can prevent a replacement from being created.
  4. The restock timing is applied. A restock value of 0 is described as no delay and therefore the fastest setting. With a positive value, descriptions differ: one says the value is the number of seconds before each additional item is spawned, while another treats it as a delay after pickup. Treat positive values as timing controls, not as a guaranteed per-player timer.
  5. A new copy is created when conditions allow. The process repeats until the economy considers the target satisfied, subject to the entry’s other limits.
  6. Untouched copies can expire. lifetime is a cleanup timer. It removes an item after it has existed for the specified number of seconds; it is not described as making new items spawn faster.

Players can also interfere with the cycle. A source used by hosting guides says players generally need to be well away from a spawn location for the full restock period before the economy can place new loot there. If somebody camps the area, an otherwise correct timing change may look broken.

types.xml fields you need to understand

Field Practical meaning What is and is not established
nominal Target count for that item across the economy. Forum and vendor descriptions agree on this broad meaning.
min A lower-limit-related value used by the economy. Its exact role is unresolved. Descriptions call it a refill trigger, a guaranteed floor or a usage-group weight where 100 represents average use. Do not treat any one interpretation as authoritative.
restock Controls the pace at which missing stock is replaced. 0 is described as no delay and the fastest option. The precise point at which a positive delay is measured is described inconsistently.
lifetime Seconds an untouched item remains before cleanup. Examples include 3600 for one hour and a very large value intended to last until a restart. Such examples are illustrations, not confirmed universal defaults.
count_in_hoarder, count_in_cargo and related flags Determines whether copies in long-term storage or cargo count toward the economy cap. Sources agree that counted stockpiles can block new world spawns, but the exact behavior of every flag should be tested on the server version you run.
quantmin and quantmax Quantity-related controls for items that contain a variable amount. Available descriptions conflict: one treats them as a percentage of stack fullness, another as the amount inside a container such as ammunition in a magazine. Avoid changing them without a controlled test.

What nominal, min and restock mean when tuning

nominal: the density target

Raising nominal gives the economy a larger target to maintain. It is the most direct way to pursue a world with more copies of a chosen item, but it does not promise that all copies will appear at once. Existing items, counted storage and spawn availability still matter.

Lowering nominal pushes the system toward scarcity. If the server already has many copies in bases or containers and those copies are counted, lowering the target may not immediately remove them; cleanup and ordinary player use have to bring the live count down.

min: do not assume the label tells you the algorithm

min is the most frequently misunderstood field because published explanations disagree. One guide calls it the point below which the server queues more stock. Forum discussions alternatively describe it as a guaranteed minimum or as a usage-group weighting value, with 100 representing average usage. Because these definitions lead to different tuning decisions, the safest practice is to leave min unchanged while testing a change to nominal or restock. Change it only when you have a known-good configuration for the exact server build and a repeatable test.

restock: speed, not quantity

Setting restock to 0 is consistently described as the fastest setting because it introduces no delay. A positive value slows replacement. It does not increase the target count; that is the job of nominal. If a server has too little of an item overall, reducing restock alone may produce a short burst of replacements and then stop at the same old cap.

Why loot can stop respawning even after an edit

Counted storage has already reached the cap

A global cap can include copies stored in player bases, tents, vehicles or other cargo when the relevant counting flags are enabled. Those items are out of sight but still satisfy the economy’s target. Emptying one visible building will not help if the rest of the stock is locked in a hoard.

Players are occupying the spawn area

Guides describe a requirement for players to be well clear of a location during the restock period. Testing while standing inside a town or repeatedly running through the same buildings can prevent a clean respawn observation.

The XML is malformed

A single broken tag can stop loot spawning, and a more serious file error can prevent the server from starting. XML is unforgiving: preserve the surrounding structure, close every element and avoid accidental changes to unrelated entries. Always keep an unmodified backup of the mission files before editing.

The change has not been applied yet

Descriptions disagree about whether the economy picks up edits at its next refresh or only after a full restart. The practical procedure supported across the available guidance is to save the file and restart the server, then check counts after the server has been running long enough for the relevant restock interval.

Step-by-step: safely increase loot for one item

  1. Identify the exact class entry. In the server’s mission files, find the item’s entry in types.xml. Do not edit a similarly named variant by mistake.
  2. Make a dated backup. Copy the original mission files somewhere outside the live configuration. Keep the untouched file so you can roll back immediately.
  3. Choose one variable to test first. Increase nominal if the goal is more total copies. Set restock to 0 only when the goal is the fastest possible replacement. Changing both at once makes the result harder to diagnose.
  4. Leave uncertain fields alone. Unless you have version-specific documentation, do not alter min, quantmin or quantmax as part of a basic density test.
  5. Preserve valid XML. Keep the existing element names, capitalization and nesting. Check that every opening tag has a matching closing tag and that the file remains well formed.
  6. Save, then restart the server. A restart is the most reliable way to force the edited mission data to load, even though some descriptions say a refresh may be sufficient.
  7. Test away from the spawn. Move players well clear of the area for at least the configured restock period. Record what you find rather than relying on one quick visit.
  8. Check hidden stock. If the count does not rise, inspect bases, cargo and other storage that the entry’s flags may include in the cap.
  9. Change only one setting in the next trial. Keep a simple log of the value, restart time, test location and observed count. This is the quickest way to separate a cap problem from a timing problem.

How to tune for different server styles

Goal nominal restock Operational trade-off
Scarce survival economy Keep targets conservative. Use a positive delay. Players must travel and wait, and hoarded items can have a larger effect on availability.
Balanced public server Raise only high-demand essentials modestly. Use a measured positive delay. Preserves scarcity while reducing the chance that one abandoned town feels empty.
High-supply or testing server Use higher targets for the items being tested. 0 gives the fastest documented replacement. Loot becomes abundant quickly; caps and storage behavior still limit the result.

These are tuning directions, not official presets. Because the available explanations do not establish a universal relationship between min and nominal, avoid copying a numeric recipe from a different server and assuming it will produce the same density.

Using events.xml for crash sites and other groups

When the thing you want to change is a crash site or another multi-object encounter, edit the corresponding event in events.xml rather than an individual item in types.xml. Events use their own target, minimum, lifetime and restock values, and they select locations from cfgeventspawns.xml.

This distinction matters when diagnosing a mixed result. A crash event may appear at the expected rate while one weapon inside it remains rare because that weapon’s own types.xml entry is at its cap. Conversely, raising a weapon’s item target does not create more crash sites; it only changes the economy’s handling of that item wherever it can spawn.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.

Lifetime: cleanup timer, not a respawn accelerator

lifetime controls how long an untouched copy survives. A value of 3600 is commonly illustrated as one hour. Some examples use a very large value to mean that an item effectively remains until the server restarts. Neither example should be assumed to be the default for every item or server version.

Changing lifetime can reduce clutter by removing abandoned objects sooner, or preserve rare loot for longer. It does not, by itself, make the Central Economy create replacements faster. If your problem is slow replacement, investigate restock, the target count, player proximity and counted storage instead.

Self-hosted and rented servers: what changes for tuning?

Consideration Self-hosted server Rented hosted server
File access You normally control the mission files and can keep local versioned backups. Access depends on the host’s control panel, file manager or support policy.
Restart control You choose when to stop and start the process. You may need a scheduled restart, panel action or host support.
Testing You can reproduce an edit with the same machine and logs. Startup timing and automated updates can add variables.
Cost and maintenance Hardware, bandwidth and administration are your responsibility. The provider handles infrastructure, while configuration limits and service terms vary.

The XML principles are the same in both cases: back up the mission data, make a small change, restart, move players away from the test area and observe the cap over time.

A troubleshooting path for an empty town

  1. Confirm the edited file is the live mission file. A correct change in an unused profile or backup directory has no effect.
  2. Revert to the backup if the server fails to start. This points to a syntax or structural error, not a loot-balance problem.
  3. Check the item’s target and restock values. A low target or positive delay can be working exactly as configured.
  4. Wait out the full timing window. Do not test immediately after a pickup or restart and conclude that the economy is broken.
  5. Clear the area during the test. Keep players away for the entire relevant period.
  6. Look for counted stockpiles. Stored copies can satisfy the cap and silently block world spawns.
  7. Separate item and event problems. If the missing object belongs to a crash site or another group, inspect events.xml and its spawn positions as well as the item entry.
  8. Change one field, restart and retest. A controlled sequence is more informative than a large batch edit.

What remains uncertain

Several popular explanations should be treated as version-sensitive rather than settled facts:

  • The exact meaning of min is disputed between trigger, floor and usage-weight interpretations.
  • The precise point at which a positive restock delay is measured is described both as a per-item spawn interval and as a delay after pickup.
  • Guidance differs on whether an economy refresh is enough or a restart is mandatory; restarting is the safer operational choice.
  • quantmin and quantmax are described inconsistently as fullness percentages or contained amounts.
  • The behavior of every counting flag, including cargo and hoarder-related flags, should be confirmed on the server version in use.
  • Illustrative lifetime values such as 3600 seconds or very large numbers are not proof of universal defaults.

These uncertainties are why a private test server or a controlled test period is more reliable than blindly importing a configuration from another community.

A practical tuning checklist

  • Back up the original mission files before every edit.
  • Decide whether you need more total stock, faster replacement, longer persistence or more event groups.
  • Use types.xml for individual items and events.xml for grouped encounters.
  • Raise nominal for a larger target; use restock for timing.
  • Remember that restock=0 is the fastest documented setting, not an unlimited-spawn switch.
  • Do not assume min has one universally agreed meaning.
  • Check storage-count flags when stock appears capped despite empty buildings.
  • Keep players away from the test location for the entire restock window.
  • Restart after saving, then record observations over more than one visit.
  • Roll back immediately if the server fails to start or loot stops globally.

The bottom line

For individual DayZ loot, start with types.xml: nominal sets the target, restock controls replacement pace and lifetime controls cleanup. Use events.xml for grouped spawns. The fastest documented replacement setting is restock=0, but no value can overcome counted hoards, an occupied spawn area or invalid XML. Because min, positive restock timing and some quantity fields are not consistently defined, make small, documented edits, restart the server and verify each result in a controlled test.
