To change a modpack version, use the launcher’s own version control rather than editing files by hand. CurseForge, Modrinth App and Prism Launcher provide an in-place switch; ATLauncher performs the change through a reinstall; MultiMC has no documented one-click modpack switch and requires a new instance with files copied manually.

What “change modpack version” actually changes
A modpack release is a bundled set of mods, configuration files, scripts, resource files and usually a target Minecraft version. Switching from one release to another asks the launcher to install the files associated with that release and remove or replace files from the current one. It is different from changing only the base Minecraft version in an instance profile.
The available target versions are controlled by the pack author or platform. If an author has not uploaded a build for your desired game version, no launcher menu can manufacture one. A version selector may therefore contain only a few releases, even when the pack has existed for years.

Before you switch: a safe checklist
- Exit Minecraft completely. Do not update an instance while the world or launcher process is still writing files. Prism guides specifically advise closing the game first; the same precaution is sensible in every launcher.
- Back up the world. Copy the world folder from the instance’s
savesdirectory to a separate location. If you use more than one world, copy the entire directory rather than relying on a single save. - Back up the instance. Preserve the instance folder, including configuration files, resource packs, screenshots, options and any locally added mods. ATLauncher’s Reinstall action is broader than a small patch, so a complete copy is especially important there.
- Record your current release. Note the pack version, Minecraft version, loader and any changes you made. This makes it possible to identify what changed if the new profile does not launch.
- Decide whether to preserve edits. Pack updates can replace configuration and mod files. In CurseForge, use the separate-profile option when you need the existing installation left intact.
Make the backup before opening the version picker, not after an update begins. If a switch fails, remove the changed instance and restore the saved copy instead of repeatedly launching a damaged world.

CurseForge app: change or downgrade a pack
Use the built-in picker
- Open the CurseForge app and select My Modpacks.
- Hover over the pack you want to change.
- Click the small arrows next to Play.
- Choose Update to the latest version, or open the dropdown and select a specific available release.
- Click Continue and let the app finish applying the files before launching the game.
The selector lists only files the pack author has uploaded for another release. If the target is absent, check the pack’s supported versions rather than trying to force a different one.
Keep the current installation as a separate profile
Changing versions can overwrite local additions. CurseForge Support states: "Any custom changes you made to the modpack’s content will be overwritten when changing versions, unless you select Update to new Profile." In the update dialog, choose Update to new Profile or enable Update to a separate modpack profile when that wording is shown. The new profile receives the selected pack release while the old profile remains available for comparison or rollback.
If Change Version is missing
Open the profile’s options and disable Allow content management for this profile. Return to the pack view and check the arrows beside Play again. A locked profile cannot expose the normal version controls until content management is enabled.
Modrinth App: switch a pack version, including a newer Minecraft release
Standard procedure
- Open Library and select the relevant instance.
- Click the gear icon to open instance settings.
- Under the installed modpack, click Change version.
- Select the target release from the available list.
- Apply the change and wait for the installation to complete before starting the instance.
The app’s changelog describes a list of every available version and an explicit confirmation step for risky changes. This is useful when a release belongs to a different Minecraft version or when the selected release is older than the one installed.

Move to a newer Minecraft version
- In the version picker, enable Show incompatible if the desired release is filtered out because its Minecraft version differs.
- Select the latest compatible pack release for the newer game version.
- Click Update to …, using the exact version shown by the app.
- Read the warning and confirm with Update modpack.
The confirmation is deliberate: the launcher is warning that the pack and game version will change together. Test a copied world first, because mods and saved data may not be compatible across game versions.
Prism Launcher: update a platform pack or a downloaded ZIP
Update a pack from CurseForge or Modrinth
- Close Minecraft and return to the Prism Launcher instance list.
- Right-click the instance and choose Edit.
- Open the platform tab corresponding to the pack source, either CurseForge or Modrinth.
- Open the version dropdown and select the target release.
- Click Update pack and allow Prism to resolve and download the files.
Guides note that a narrow window can hide part of the version list; widen the window if the selector appears incomplete. The exact tab can differ according to where the instance originated, so use the tab that contains the pack’s platform metadata.
Update from a ZIP file
For a pack ZIP you downloaded yourself, use Update from File in the same pack-management area and select the new archive. Keep the old instance backup until the imported pack launches and the copied world has been checked.
Prism’s official site identifies it as a free, open-source Minecraft launcher. A site listing showed version 11.0.3, while a third-party guide published in 2026 mentioned 11.1.1, released in September 2026. Because those version references conflict, rely on the labels displayed by your installed build rather than expecting a particular menu layout. The step sequence above comes from a community guide, not verified official in-place documentation.
ATLauncher: use Reinstall to select another release
- Open the Instances tab.
- Select the instance you want to change.
- Click Edit Instance.
- Choose Reinstall.
- Under Version to Install, select the target pack version. One guide notes that the newest build appears at the top of this list.
- Click Reinstall and wait for the process to finish.
ATLauncher’s wording matters: this is a reinstall workflow rather than a narrowly scoped patch. Treat it as a replacement of the managed pack files and keep the instance backup until the new installation has passed your checks. The documented material does not establish how every ATLauncher pack handles a mismatch between the selected pack and Minecraft versions, so read the pack’s own compatibility notes before proceeding.

MultiMC: the documented manual migration
MultiMC does not have a documented built-in modpack version switch in the available guidance. Its Instance Version page concerns changing the base Minecraft version; that operation can replace loaders such as Forge or LiteLoader and is not equivalent to selecting a new modpack release.
Create a new instance
- Click Add Instance.
- Open the Modrinth tab.
- Choose the pack and install the target version as a separate instance.
- Do not delete the old instance yet.
Copy personal files
After the new instance has been created, copy the required personal data from the old instance. The Fabulously Optimized guide specifically lists saves, resource packs, screenshots and options files. Copy only what you need, and preserve the original folders until the new instance launches successfully. Mods and configuration files supplied by the old pack should not be copied indiscriminately, because they may conflict with the target release.
Verify and clean up
Launch the new instance, check that the world loads, verify controls and resource packs, and inspect the logs for missing or incompatible mods. Delete the old instance only after those checks and after confirming that your backup opens independently.
GDLauncher: the shorter path
GDLauncher is included for completeness. Open the instance’s settings page and use the Change Modpack Version button, then select the desired release and apply it. The same backup and compatibility precautions apply; a convenient button does not make a cross-version world conversion safe.

- Pack-version change: replaces the collection of mods, configs and other files associated with a release. The target may use the same Minecraft version or a different one.
- Base-version change: changes the Minecraft version configured for an instance and may replace its mod loader. MultiMC documents this operation separately under Instance Version.
- Cross-version pack update: changes both the pack release and the game version. Modrinth App exposes an explicit confirmation path for this case through Show incompatible, Update to …, and Update modpack.
Do not assume that selecting a newer pack release automatically updates every loader or that changing the loader alone installs the pack’s matching mods. Use the pack’s own release entry when your goal is a modpack update.
Downgrading is the highest-risk direction
Older releases can expect different block IDs, registry entries, world-generation rules, configuration formats or mod data. The Fabulously Optimized wiki warns: "Never downgrade to an older version, this could corrupt your worlds and settings!" Treat that as a practical stop signal for a valuable save. If you must test an older release, do it on a duplicate world and keep the original instance untouched.
For a safer rollback, restore the complete instance backup made before the failed update rather than downgrading the already-updated copy. A launcher’s version picker cannot undo changes that a mod has already written into a world.
After the switch: a verification sequence
- Start the instance without opening your only copy of a valuable world.
- Confirm the title screen shows the expected Minecraft and loader versions.
- Check the installed-mod list for missing dependencies or duplicate files.
- Open a test copy of the world and look for missing blocks, reset settings, disabled resource packs or changed key bindings.
- Join a local test area, inspect inventories and machines, and save and exit normally.
- Only then use the updated instance for your primary world.
If the launcher reports a missing mod, return to the exact pack release you recorded and compare the instance contents with the backup. If the game crashes during startup, remove recently added custom files from the test copy first; do not delete the original backup while troubleshooting.

The target version is not listed
The pack author may not have uploaded a build for that Minecraft version, the launcher may be filtering incompatible releases, or the instance may not be recognized as a managed pack. In Modrinth App, enable Show incompatible when you intentionally need a different game version. In CurseForge, no alternative appears until the author publishes another file.

The Change Version control is missing
In CurseForge, disable Allow content management for this profile in Profile Options. In other launchers, confirm that you opened the pack-management tab rather than the ordinary Minecraft-version or loader editor.
The update finished but custom files disappeared
That is consistent with a managed pack replacement. Restore the backup or use CurseForge’s separate-profile option for future switches. Keep personal files outside the managed instance when the launcher’s documentation supports that arrangement, and reapply edits only after confirming they work with the new release.

Check the selected Minecraft version, loader, Java runtime and dependency errors in the log. A pack built for another game version may require a different loader or Java release. Revert to the backed-up instance if the error involves world data or if repeated launches change files further.
The world opens with missing content
Stop and close the game without saving over the original world. Restore the pre-switch copy, then test the target release with a duplicate. Missing blocks or items can be caused by removed mods and may not be recoverable by returning to the old pack after the world has been saved.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change a modpack version by editing a file?
Use the launcher’s version control instead. The launcher must resolve the release’s files, dependencies and metadata; manually changing a text value does not install the correct pack.
Is updating to a newer modpack version always safe?
No. Back up first and test a duplicate world, especially when the Minecraft version changes. Downgrades carry a specific corruption warning.

Why does Modrinth ask me to confirm Update modpack?
The confirmation appears for higher-risk changes, including a release built for a different Minecraft version or an older release. It gives you a chance to cancel before files are replaced.
Does MultiMC’s Instance Version option update a modpack?
No. It changes the base Minecraft version and can replace loaders such as Forge or LiteLoader. Modpack migration in MultiMC is a separate, manual new-instance process.
