Under both the 2024 and 2014 D&D Basic Rules, a creature can be attuned to no more than three magic items at a time. You cannot add a fourth while all three slots are occupied; end an existing attunement first.
How many items can you be attuned to?
The 2024 Basic Rules set the limit at three magic items at one time. The official 2014 Basic Rules use the same limit, so the basic answer does not change between those rules versions.
The limit is about how many magic items you are attuned to simultaneously—not how many items you have attuned to over the course of a campaign. See the 2024 Basic Rules, Equipment: Attunement, or the 2014 Basic Rules, Magic Items: Attunement.
What happens if you try to attune to a fourth item?
The attempt fails if you are already attuned to three items. You must end one of those attunements before you can attune to another magic item.

How does attunement work?
Under the 2024 Basic Rules, attuning requires a focused Short Rest while you are in physical contact with the item. The rest must be focused on that item; if the attempt is interrupted, it fails. The 2014 Basic Rules describe the same process.
Do the rules have exceptions to the three-item limit?
The general limit in the official 2014 and 2024 Basic Rules is three. A 2024 Unearthed Arcana Artificer playtest proposed higher limits for that class at specific levels: four attuned items at level 10, five at level 14, and six at level 18. That is playtest material, not the general rule in the Basic Rules. See the 2024 Unearthed Arcana Artificer playtest.

Can two creatures attune to the same item?
The 2014 Basic Rules say a magic item can be attuned to only one creature at a time. They also say a creature cannot attune to more than one copy of the same item; the rules give multiple Rings of Protection as an example.

No. The official free 2024 Basic Rules publish the three-item limit and the attunement procedure. The Player’s Handbook is optional if you want the complete book rather than just the free rules.
