There are roughly 900 officially licensed games for the combined Sega Mega Drive/Genesis platform, but no single universally accepted total. Published counts range from 878 to about 930, with broader catalogues listing more than 1,000. Those figures use different rules for regional versions, unusual distribution methods and later releases.
Why there is no single definitive total
The number depends on what counts as a game: licensed releases only or every release, unique titles or regional editions, and whether titles distributed through services or released later are included. The Mega Drive and Genesis are regional names for the same console platform; Sega identifies Genesis as the North American name. Sega’s history site lists software by publisher category, but the official catalog pages reviewed do not give one consolidated worldwide total.
How the published counts compare
| Count | What it represents | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 878 | Licensed game titles in a particular published list. | List of Sega Genesis games; this is a list-specific figure, not a universal Sega-issued total. The page’s publication year is not stated. |
| About 930 | Official releases counted under a community inventory’s chosen rules. | Sega-16 Forums inventory, updated June 2020; it discusses exclusions and difficult cases. |
| Over 1,000 | A broader Mega Drive games category. | Sega Retro category; its broader framing produces a higher figure. |
These totals are not directly comparable: the sources do not all use the same inclusion criteria. A regional edition or translation might be counted separately in one catalogue but not another. Sega Channel and other nonstandard distribution, later releases, and debated cases can also change a total. The figures are best read as answers to slightly different cataloguing questions rather than competing measurements of one fixed number.
What the count includes—and what it does not
For a practical worldwide estimate, “roughly 900 licensed Mega Drive/Genesis games” is a useful shorthand. It refers to the base console library, not a count of unique game concepts across every edition and not a tally of every ROM or cartridge that has circulated.

- Sega Megadrive 1 Console from Japan!
- The "original" Genesis!
- Regional releases: A game released in more than one region may appear as one title or multiple entries, depending on the list.
- Distribution and edge cases: Some inventories consider service-distributed games, later releases and disputed cases differently.
- Add-on libraries: Sega CD/Mega-CD and 32X games belong to their respective add-on libraries, not the base Mega Drive count.
Sega Retro identifies Brazil-exclusive Show do Milhão Volume 2 (2002) as the last officially licensed release, illustrating why a count that includes later and regional titles can differ from a narrower list. That detail does not make every catalogue’s inclusion rules identical.
Does Sega publish an official total?
Sega’s historical software pages separate games published by Sega from games published by licensed third parties. The third-party page describes its contents as Mega Drive-exclusive software released by Sega and its licensees. These catalogs document titles and release details, but the reviewed pages do not state a single worldwide aggregate, so none of the figures above should be presented as an exact total confirmed by Sega.

Bottom line for readers
Say about 900 officially licensed games worldwide if you need a concise answer, and qualify it as an estimate. Use 878 when referring specifically to that published licensed-games list; about 930 for the June 2020 Sega-16 inventory’s rules; or over 1,000 when describing Sega Retro’s broader category. Keep the Mega Drive/Genesis base library separate from Mega-CD/Sega CD and 32X games.
