How long does it take to beat DOOM: The Dark Ages?

#1 Best Overall
- Developed by id Software, DOOM: The Dark Ages is the prequel to the critically acclaimed DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal that tells the epic cinematic origin story of the DOOM Slayer’s rage.
- In this third installment of the modern DOOM series, players will step into the blood-stained boots of the DOOM Slayer, in this never-before-seen dark and sinister medieval war against Hell.

- As the super weapon of gods and kings, shred enemies with devastating favorites like the Super Shotgun while also wielding a variety of new bone-chewing weapons, including the versatile Shield Saw.
- Experience the origin story of the DOOM Slayer’s rage in this epic, cinematic, and action-packed story.
| Play style | Estimated time | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Main objectives | About 15 hours | Push Square estimate on Hurt Me Plenty, focusing on objectives. |
| Casual run with some secrets | 18–22 hours | PC Gamer estimate. |
| Exploration and collectibles | 20–25 hours | Push Square estimate on Ultra-Violence. |
| Completionist / 100% run | About 30 hours or more | Push Square suggests about 30 hours for 100%; PC Gamer says its reviewer spent upwards of 30 hours on a completionist run. |
PC Gamer staff writer Morgan Park reported finishing in around 16 hours after picking up many secrets along the way. That is one reviewer’s playthrough, not a standard completion time. Estimates differ because difficulty, pace, and optional exploration change how long a run takes.
Why chapter count does not predict your total playtime
The 22 chapters are not equal-length segments. PC Gamer notes that some open, objective-based missions take longer, while “Barrier Core” and “Hellbreaker” are short and linear. Dividing a total-hour estimate by 22 therefore will not give a reliable typical chapter length.

Exploration is also a deliberate part of the game rather than simply time spent between story beats. In an official interview, id Software Game Director Hugo Martin described its engagement pillars as “combat, exploration and story – three reasons to play, narrative is just one of them.” (Official interview with Hugo Martin.) That helps explain why players who pursue secrets and collectibles should expect a longer run than players focused on objectives.
