There is no single duplicate limit in Magic: The Gathering: it depends on the format. Most Constructed decks can include up to four copies of a nonbasic card, while constructed Commander and Brawl use a one-copy rule. Basic lands can repeat, and some draft rules differ from constructed play.
How many copies can you have in a Magic deck?
For ordinary Constructed formats, the general limit is up to four copies of a nonbasic card. Commander and Brawl are singleton formats, where you normally play only one copy of a card with a given name, with basic lands treated as exceptions. A card’s legality and any format-specific banned or restricted rules can change what you may include.
Duplicate limits by format
| Format | Duplicate rule | Context |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary Constructed | Up to four copies of a nonbasic card | Check the format’s legality list and any restricted-card rule. |
| Commander (constructed) | One card of each name, except basic lands | The deck has 100 cards including the commander. Wizards’ Commander overview states that, other than basic lands, each card in the deck must have a different name. |
| Brawl | One copy, with multiple basic lands allowed | Wizards describes Brawl as a digital 1v1 format on MTG Arena. |
| Commander Masters Draft | More than one copy of a drafted card may be included | The Commander Masters release notes specify that draft deck construction differs from constructed Commander. |
How the four-copy rule works
Wizards Head Designer Mark Rosewater explains that Constructed formats allow “up to four of each nonbasic card,” while Commander is singleton. The four-copy limit is a general Constructed rule, not permission to ignore card legality: a card must be allowed in the format you are playing.
There is also a restricted-card exception. Under the official Banned & Restricted list, a restricted card is limited to one copy counting both the main deck and sideboard. Restricted lists apply in the formats that use them, so check the relevant current list rather than assuming every format handles a card the same way.

Why Commander has a different answer
Constructed Commander is singleton: aside from basic lands, a deck can contain only one card of each name. The deck is 100 cards total, including the commander. That rule is specific to the constructed format; it should not be carried over automatically to a Commander-themed draft.

Draft deck construction can have exceptions to a format’s usual constructed rule. For example, Commander Masters Draft allows players to include multiple copies of cards they drafted. This does not change the one-copy rule for a constructed Commander deck.
