If you mean frigates assigned to your freighter fleet, you can have up to 30, according to the No Man’s Sky Resources frigate guide. That is the frigate-fleet limit—not the number of starships you can own or squadron pilots you can recruit.
What counts as a fleet ship?
In No Man’s Sky, “fleet ships” most naturally means frigates: vessels recruited into the fleet managed through your freighter. Hello Games’ Endurance update discusses frigates, fleet missions and freighter systems as distinct from your personal starships.
The specialist No Man’s Sky Resources frigate guide states that a fleet can have a maximum of 30 frigates. Hello Games’ update pages reviewed describe frigates and fleet management but do not state this specific cap, so 30 should be treated as the guide’s reported limit rather than an official developer quotation.
How the limit differs from other ship limits

How to apply the 30-frigate answer
When asking how many ships can be in your fleet, count frigates recruited into the freighter’s fleet—not personal starships or squadron pilots. For that specific category, the reported maximum is 30.
