Minecraft lists five playable game modes: Survival, Hardcore, Creative, Adventure, and Spectator. The count can seem lower because Minecraft also describes Creative and Survival as its two standard modes, with Hardcore treated as a Survival subcategory in Java Edition.
How Minecraft counts its game modes
Minecraft Help lists five playable modes. Its introductory guide uses a different grouping: it calls Creative and Survival the two standard game modes and places Hardcore under Survival in Java Edition. Those descriptions use different levels of classification, so neither count is necessarily a contradiction. Minecraft Help’s list gives the five-name answer; Minecraft’s introductory guide explains the two-standard-modes framing.
What each mode lets you do
| Mode | Purpose and rules |
|---|---|
| Survival | Gather resources, craft, explore, and contend with hostile mobs. Minecraft describes it as “the traditional Minecraft experience.” |
| Hardcore | A one-life challenge. Death is permanent; Minecraft Help says you lose the ability to play in that world, though you can spectate. The introductory guide classifies Hardcore as a Survival subcategory in Java Edition. |
| Creative | Build with unlimited resources, fly, and avoid ordinary damage. |
| Adventure | Play creator-authored experiences. Placing or breaking blocks is restricted unless you have items that permit it. |
| Spectator | Observe a world without interacting with or physically altering it; you can move through blocks. |
These descriptions follow Minecraft Help’s mode guide and Minecraft’s overview. They are useful for understanding each mode’s general purpose, not a guarantee that every mode works identically in every edition, platform, or version; the official descriptions cited here do not provide a complete availability matrix.
Game modes are not difficulty settings
Peaceful, Easy, Normal, and Hard are difficulty settings, not additional game modes. Minecraft’s introductory guide says these settings apply to Creative and Survival, and matter most in Survival. Changing difficulty does not add four modes to the count.
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
Which mode should you choose?
- For the standard challenge: choose Survival to gather and craft resources while facing the world’s hazards.
- For building: choose Creative for unlimited resources and flight.
- For a high-stakes run: choose Hardcore if you want death to end ordinary play in that world.
- For a designed map or experience: choose Adventure, where block interaction can be limited by the creator.
- For viewing or exploring without changing the world: choose Spectator.
Hardcore death rules are explained in Minecraft’s guide to spawning and dying. Community-made worlds, mini-games, and adventure maps can also shape what you do within Minecraft, but they are experiences rather than extra entries in the five-mode list.
