There is no single capacity for every game disc. It depends on the disc format and, for console games, the platform generation: a single-layer DVD holds 4.7GB, standard Blu-ray media hold 25GB or 50GB, and PlayStation lists capacities of up to 50GB for a PS4 game disc and up to 100GB for a PS5 game disc. Those are disc capacities—not a promise that a particular game is fully playable from the disc without installation, updates or downloads.
Game disc capacities at a glance

| Single-sided, dual-layer DVD | 8.5GB | Format capacity listed by Sony Support. Sony Support |
| Standard Blu-ray Disc | 25GB single-layer; 50GB dual-layer | Standard media capacities listed by Sony Support. Sony Support |
| PS4 Blu-ray game disc | Up to 50GB | PlayStation’s stated maximum game-data capacity per disc. PlayStation FAQ |
| PS5 Ultra HD Blu-ray game disc | Up to 100GB | PlayStation’s stated maximum per game disc; PS5 specifications identify the format as Ultra HD Blu-ray. PlayStation FAQ |
Sony also lists double-sided DVDs at 9.4GB (single-layer) and 17GB (dual-layer). Those capacities require two recording sides, so they should not be confused with the usual single-sided DVD figures. Sony Support
How much data can a PS4 or PS5 disc hold?
PS4: up to 50GB
PlayStation says a PS4 Blu-ray game disc can store up to 50GB of game data. This is a maximum capacity, not the size of every PS4 disc or a statement about how much of a specific title is on it. PlayStation FAQ
PS5: up to 100GB
PlayStation says a PS5 Blu-ray disc can store up to 100GB of game data. Its hardware specifications describe the PS5 game disc as Ultra HD Blu-ray, also with a capacity of up to 100GB per disc. PlayStation FAQ

Does the disc contain the whole game?
Capacity tells you how much data a disc format can hold; it does not tell you what a publisher put on an individual disc. A disc may be used to install game data, and a title may also require updates or downloads. The official capacity figures do not establish the on-disc contents or download requirements of each game, so check the specific game’s packaging or publisher information if you need to know what works offline.
Why does a computer show fewer than the printed GB?
Disc makers use decimal gigabytes (GB), where 1GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes. Some computer software reports binary gibibytes (GiB), where 1GiB is 1,073,741,824 bytes, while often labeling that number “GB.” The displayed value can therefore look smaller without indicating missing capacity.

What about Xbox, Nintendo and other game discs?
Disc capacity varies by format and platform, so a DVD or PlayStation figure should not be treated as a universal specification for every console. The available official capacity specifications here establish the DVD and Blu-ray format figures and the PlayStation game-disc limits above; they do not establish a complete set of platform-specific capacities for Xbox and Nintendo game discs.
Will new PlayStation games still come on disc?
On July 1, 2026, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that physical disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028. Sony said the change does not affect games already released, or games that release before that date, in disc format. This is a future-dated policy announcement, not a change to the capacities of existing discs. Sony Interactive Entertainment announcement
