Recent surveys put gaming at roughly 7 to 15 hours a week, but there is no single average that applies to every gamer. The results differ by country, age group and survey definition: for example, Video Games Europe reports 8 hours 59 minutes a week for people in Europe in 2025, while a survey of weekly gamers aged 18–35 in the United States, Brazil and Japan found about 15 hours.
How much time do gamers spend playing each week?
The most useful short answer is about 7–15 hours per week across these recent surveys. That is a range of estimates from different populations, not a universal global average or a single harmonized measurement.
For a daily equivalent, 7–15 hours a week works out to an average of 1 hour a day to about 2 hours 9 minutes a day when divided by seven. This arithmetic does not mean people play every day; weekly play can be concentrated in a few sessions.
What recent surveys report
| Population and geography | Reported playtime | Source and period |
|---|---|---|
| People in Europe | 8 hours 59 minutes per week | Video Games Europe, 2025 estimate, in its 2025 report |
| Weekly gamers aged 18–35 in the United States, Brazil and Japan | About 15 hours per week overall; 17 hours in the United States, 15 in Brazil and 12 in Japan | ASHA, 2024 online survey of 1,678 weekly gamers: 506 in the United States, 524 in Brazil and 648 in Japan (ASHA survey) |
| Gamers aged 16–64 in the United Kingdom | 6 hours 57 minutes per week | Ampere Analysis data for Q2 2024, reported by Ofcom in Online Nation 2024 |
Video Games Europe’s figure is its 2025 estimate, not a timeless constant; the report’s series from 2012 to 2025 varies over time. The other figures describe different surveyed groups and should not be averaged together as if they measured the same population.

How playtime varies by group and device
UK age and gender subgroups
Ofcom’s report gives a weekly average of 7 hours 29 minutes for UK gamers aged 25–34. For gamers aged 16–64, it reports averages of 8 hours 4 minutes for men and 5 hours 51 minutes for women. These are subgroup results; the figures alone do not explain why the groups differ.
Australian hours by device
An Australian Government survey asked respondents who had played games in the preceding seven days about time spent on different devices. Its weekly hours per user were:

| Device | Average weekly hours per user |
|---|---|
| Computer | 9.8 |
| Xbox | 8.4 |
| PlayStation | 7.5 |
| Smartphone | 6.8 |
| Tablet | 7.4 |
| Nintendo devices | 6.2 |
These are averages for individual device categories from the Australian Government Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts’ 2024 survey (Survey of Australian Gamers 2024). They are not an all-device total: adding them would count device-specific measures as though they were mutually exclusive hours for one person.
Why the estimates differ
- Who counts as a gamer: a survey of weekly players aged 18–35 is not directly comparable with a measure of gamers aged 16–64 or a report describing people in Europe.
- What time is counted: some figures refer to total playtime, while the Australian results are averages for each device category.
- When the survey was conducted: the results come from different periods, including 2024 and 2025, and play habits can change over time.
- How the figure is presented: an average does not show how widely individual players’ hours vary.
A separate Deloitte Insights survey article estimates around 12 hours a week for respondents who play at least once a week, rising to roughly 13–14 hours for Gen Z and Millennials. It offers contextual corroboration, not a population-wide benchmark, because it uses a different sample (Deloitte Insights).

Why a general time-use statistic is not a gamer average
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported 37 minutes per average day in 2025 for a broad category combining playing games and using a computer for leisure. That category includes board games, video games, social media and other computer activities, and covers the general population rather than gamers alone. It cannot be used as an estimate of how long gamers play (BLS American Time Use Survey).
