To use a .schem file in Minecraft, load it into WorldEdit’s clipboard with //schem load <filename>, then place it in your world with //paste. WorldEdit must be installed in the right place and able to read the file; the folder location and format compatibility depend on your setup.
What you need before loading a .schem file
A .schem file stores a Minecraft structure; it is not something the game places by itself. This walkthrough uses WorldEdit. Install a WorldEdit version compatible with your Minecraft version, and make sure you are using the instance where you want the structure: your local game for single-player, or the server where you are building. On a server, you also need permission to use WorldEdit commands.
The Sponge schematic specification describes the file as a serialized region of a Minecraft world and recommends .schem to distinguish it from the older .schematic extension. It stores data in NBT compressed with gzip, but you do not normally need to open or edit those internals to load a structure. Read the Sponge schematic specification.
How to load and paste a .schem file
- Place the file where WorldEdit can access it. The correct folder depends on whether WorldEdit is running as a local mod or as a server plugin. Check the configuration for the specific WorldEdit installation you are using rather than assuming one directory applies everywhere.
- Check that WorldEdit can see the file. In Minecraft, run
//schem list. The official command reference also documents//schem formats, which can help you check which schematic formats your installed build supports. See the WorldEdit command reference. - Load the schematic. Run
//schem load <filename>, replacing<filename>with the name WorldEdit recognizes. The command is also available as//schematic load. Loading puts the structure in WorldEdit’s clipboard; it does not place it in the world yet. WorldEdit’s clipboard guide documents the load command. - Place it in the world. Position yourself where you want to place the structure, then run
//paste. The result is positioned relative to the schematic’s saved origin and offset, not necessarily centered on your character. If placement matters, check the target area first and protect important builds before pasting a large structure. WorldEdit explains schematic origins and offsets.
Why a .schem file might not load
WorldEdit cannot find the file
Confirm that the file is in a location accessible to the WorldEdit instance you are using, and check the filename spelling. A local mod installation and a server plugin installation may use different locations. Use //schem list to see the files WorldEdit recognizes.

The format or version is incompatible
A .schem extension alone does not guarantee that every editor, Minecraft edition, or WorldEdit release can read the file. WorldEdit’s documentation says version 7, associated with Minecraft 1.13, introduced its Sponge schematic format because the older format did not suit the newer block format. WorldEdit also documents a legacy compatibility layer for importing older .schematic files. Check the supported formats for your installed build with //schem formats and verify compatibility with the Minecraft version you are targeting. The structure pastes in an unexpected position
Schematics retain origin and offset information, and third-party software may interpret relative positions differently. If the structure appears shifted from the spot you expected, account for the saved origin when choosing where to stand before pasting. WorldEdit’s clipboard guide describes this behavior.

Local WorldEdit mod or server plugin?

In either setup, use //schem list to confirm that the relevant WorldEdit instance sees the file before trying to load it. WorldEdit’s command reference lists schematic management commands and their permissions.
