How Many Joy-Cons Do You Need for Mario Party?

Four local players generally need four controllers—not four Joy-Con pairs. The exact Joy-Con requirement depends on which Mario Party game and mode you’re playing.

For four-player local Mario Party on one Nintendo Switch, plan on four controllers—one per player. In Super Mario Party, each person can use a single Joy-Con held horizontally, so nobody needs a left-and-right pair. The answer differs by game: Mario Party Superstars calls for one controller per player without requiring Joy-Con, while Super Mario Party Jamboree requires Joy-Con for motion-control minigames.

How many controllers do four players need?

For a local game on one console, have one controller for each person: four players need four controllers. A Joy-Con pair is two separate controllers; whether each player needs a pair depends on the specific Mario Party game.

Controller requirements by Mario Party game

Game Local players on one system What controller to plan for
Super Mario Party Up to four One Joy-Con per player; a pair is not required. Nintendo Support
Mario Party Superstars Up to four offline players One controller per player. Nintendo does not make Joy-Con mandatory in its setup instructions. Nintendo Support
Super Mario Party Jamboree One to four in Mario Party mode; player limits vary by mode Joy-Con are required for motion-control minigames. Check the selected mode’s player limit. Nintendo · Nintendo Support
Jamboree Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV Up to four in Mario Party mode Its additional mouse-control and camera features do not change the basic player count; camera play is optional. Nintendo

Can you use one Joy-Con per person?

Yes, in Super Mario Party. Nintendo’s support instructions say each player must use a single Joy-Con or Joy-Con 2. The controller is used horizontally, with each player holding one half of a pair. To set one up, detach it, open the HOME menu, select Controllers, then Change Grip/Order, and press the two shoulder buttons on that Joy-Con as prompted. Nintendo’s setup guide explains the multiplayer setup.

That one-Joy-Con arrangement is specific to Super Mario Party; do not assume every Mario Party game supports the same controller setup. For Mario Party Superstars, Nintendo says to connect a controller for each player rather than requiring Joy-Con specifically.

Does online play change the number?

Yes. Player limits can differ between one-console local play, local wireless, and online modes. For example, Mario Party Superstars supports up to three players on a system in local play and online friend play, but only one player per system in Global Games. These are different setups from four people playing locally on one console. Nintendo’s mode and player-limit details list the distinctions.

What to check before you start

  • Confirm the exact game and edition; controller rules are not identical across the series.
  • For four local players, count four controllers total—not four pairs unless the game or chosen setup calls for them.
  • In Jamboree, check the mode and minigame: motion-control minigames require Joy-Con.
  • For Switch 2, original Switch Joy-Con can pair wirelessly but cannot attach to the console; Joy-Con 2 are another option. Nintendo Support
