You can unlock 23 kart bodies in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. That number counts kart bodies only—not every vehicle body or every customization part. Bikes, ATVs, tires, and gliders are separate parts of the game’s vehicle system.
What does the 23-kart count include?
The 23 figure refers specifically to kart bodies, according to the MarioWiki reference listing. Nintendo’s guide groups vehicle bodies into karts, ATVs, and bikes, so 23 is not the total number of vehicles you can customize.

Nintendo describes a customized vehicle as three parts: “Vehicles are made up of three parts. These are Bodies, which determine the vehicle’s basic stats; Tires, which affect speed and ease of handling; and Gliders, which are used to adjust acceleration and weight.” See Nintendo’s Beginner Basics for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
How do you unlock kart bodies?
Nintendo says vehicle parts can be obtained by collecting coins. For most standard parts, a secondary unlock guide reports that parts are awarded randomly at coin milestones, with the interval between milestones increasing as your accumulated coin total grows. The guide also describes separate requirements for special gold parts; it does not mean every kart body follows one identical, fixed unlock sequence. See the unlock guide for its reported details.

Gold parts have separate conditions
The Gold Standard kart is a special unlock, as are the Gold Glider and Gold Tires. Their requirements differ from the ordinary coin-based part progression, so collecting coins alone does not describe the full unlock process for every gold item.

Nintendo’s Booster Course Pass materials describe added courses and characters. In its announcement of the final wave, Nintendo named Funky Kong, Diddy Kong, Pauline, and Peachette as the final character additions and said the pass was complete. The published materials reviewed do not state that the pass adds kart bodies, so those course and character additions should not be added to the 23-body count.
