How many controllers do you need?
Each local player needs a controller connected to the Xbox. Minecraft’s split-screen setup requirements also describe signing in with a console profile when adding players.

How to start split-screen on Xbox
- Open Minecraft: Bedrock Edition on the Xbox and have the host sign in to a Microsoft account.
- Open the world you want to play.
- Connect another player’s controller, select a console profile, and follow the on-screen prompt to join.
- Repeat for additional players, up to four players total, including the host.
Minecraft’s Xbox split-screen help page lists Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S as supporting four local players.
Do you need Xbox Game Pass Core?
The subscription condition depends on the world’s multiplayer setting. Minecraft’s split-screen requirements say that if multiplayer is enabled, all players need an active Xbox Game Pass Core subscription; if multiplayer is turned off, that requirement does not apply. Xbox subscription terms can change, so check the current requirements for your account and region.

Does the four-player limit include online friends?
Four is the local split-screen limit for people sharing one Xbox screen, not an online multiplayer total. Minecraft describes Realms separately, with capacity for up to 10 friends at a time; that figure is for the online service and does not increase the number of people playing locally on one console. Minecraft says split-screen multiplayer is not supported while Vibrant Visuals is active. When multiple players join locally, the game switches rendering mode. Details appear in Minecraft’s Vibrant Visuals update information.
