It depends on which version of World of Warcraft you play: Blizzard’s Retail guide says three players per realm can win each Sunday, while a guide covering WoW Classic Patch 1.15.8 says one player per server wins each tournament. In both versions, the qualifying objective is to turn in 40 Speckled Tastyfish to Riggle Bassbait in Booty Bay.
Winner count by game version
| Version | How many can win? | What qualifies |
|---|---|---|
| Retail | Three players per realm each Sunday, according to Blizzard’s official event guide. | The first three players to return to Riggle Bassbait in Booty Bay with 40 Speckled Tastyfish. Those three also earn the Master Angler of Azeroth achievement. |
| WoW Classic | One player per server per tournament, according to the WoW Classic guide for Patch 1.15.8, updated April 27, 2025. | The first player to catch and turn in 40 Speckled Tastyfish to Riggle Bassbait in Booty Bay. |
These counts describe different game versions; do not apply the Retail limit to Classic, or vice versa. Blizzard’s announcement for WoW Classic 20th Anniversary Edition Phase 4 confirms the event is included, but does not specify how many winners there are.
Can more than one person win in Classic?
The Classic guide gives the general rule as one winner per server per tournament. However, players commenting on the guide have reported repeated turn-ins and resets that may allow additional turn-ins in some circumstances. Those reports do not establish that every Classic realm currently behaves that way. If you are competing on a particular realm, check its live in-game announcement and the NPC’s response rather than assuming the one-winner rule is enforced identically everywhere.
When does the tournament run?
The schedule differs in the available version-specific descriptions. Blizzard’s Retail page lists Sunday at 14:00 server time. The Classic guide lists Sundays from 14:00 to 16:00 server time, with turn-ins available until 17:00. Check your in-game announcement for the schedule that applies to your realm.

What can participants get if they do not win?
Not winning the race does not necessarily mean leaving empty-handed. Blizzard says Retail participants can sell Speckled Tastyfish for gold and trade rare event fish for prizes. The Classic guide also describes cash turn-ins and prizes for rare fish. Check the relevant event NPCs for the available options in your version.
