Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 reached a reported peak of 306,460 concurrent players on Steam during its opening weekend in October 2024, and it topped Steam’s top-seller chart, according to an October 29 report by NME citing SteamDB. That is a strong Steam launch, but the player peak is not a sales total, a count of unique players, or a measure of everyone playing across platforms.
What was Black Ops 6’s Steam player peak?
The opening-weekend peak reported in 2024 was 306,460 concurrent Steam players. NME reported the figure on October 29, citing SteamDB, and said Black Ops 6 was also number one on Steam’s top-seller chart at the time. The historic SteamDB chart itself was not directly available in the cited report, so the peak should be attributed to NME’s reporting rather than presented as independently checked here.
Concurrent players means the number of people playing at the same time. It does not tell us how many copies were sold or how many distinct people played during the weekend. The top-seller position is a separate storefront ranking, not a unit-sales figure.
Was it the biggest Call of Duty launch?
The available launch reporting supports a strong launch, but it does not establish that Black Ops 6 had the biggest Call of Duty launch by every measure. Steam’s 306,460 concurrent-player peak is a platform-specific, time-specific figure; a fair comparison with another Call of Duty release would need the same metric, platform, and period.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella was reported as saying that Black Ops 6 set a record for Game Pass subscriber additions on launch day. He also reported that PlayStation and Steam sales were more than 60% higher year over year than Modern Warfare III. GameSpot’s October 31, 2024 report provides no absolute subscriber-addition or unit-sales totals, so neither statement yields a full player count or a directly comparable number of copies sold.
Those broader claims indicate strength beyond Steam, but they do not show how much activity came from Steam versus PlayStation, Xbox, Game Pass, Battle.net, or Microsoft’s PC Store.

Why do Black Ops 6 launch dates differ?
Activision gives October 25, 2024 as the game’s launch date, while the Steam listing gives November 1, 2024 as its release date. These are platform-specific dates shown by the publisher and storefront, not interchangeable dates. The reported opening-weekend figure refers to Steam activity in the launch period described by NME.
Steam is only one part of the audience
Black Ops 6 was available on PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, Microsoft PC Store, Steam, Battle.net, and Game Pass. Activision notes that Game Pass access requires an eligible active subscription. Steam’s peak therefore measures only concurrent users on that storefront, not the game’s entire audience.

SteamDB’s page for app 4384550 lists a Steam release date of July 7, 2026, and a peak of 2,705 concurrent players on September 7, 2026. Those app-specific figures are not a replacement for the 2024 opening-weekend peak reported by NME: the app page’s release metadata indicates a different measurement context. Treat the two figures separately rather than reading them as a like-for-like trend for the same Steam listing.
