You need 16 pets of the same species to make one Mega Neon if you are starting with regular pets: four regular pets make one Neon, and four Neons make one Mega Neon. Both combinations take place in the Neon Cave.
How the Mega Neon recipe works
Adopt Me! combines pets in two stages. First, four fully grown pets of the same species become one Neon. Then four fully grown Neons of the same species become one Mega Neon. A Neon made in the cave can be aged again for the second step, according to Uplift Games Support’s Neon Making guide. The game’s April 17, 2020 Mega Neons update notes describe turning four fully aged Neons into one Mega Neon.

Pet count, step by step
- Raise four pets of the same species until each is fully grown.
- Combine them at the Neon Cave to make one Neon.
- Repeat until you have four Neons of that species.
- Age each Neon until it is fully grown.
- Combine the four fully grown Neons at the Neon Cave to make one Mega Neon.
The total is 4 Neons × 4 regular pets per Neon = 16 regular pets. This is calculated from the official recipe, not a separate published game statistic.
Can Fly or Ride abilities transfer?
Yes. Uplift Games says Fly and Ride abilities can transfer to the Neon or Mega Neon created from pets with those abilities. You need only one pet with each ability among the pets used in the creation process; for example, a Flyable pet and a Rideable pet can pass both abilities to the finished pet.
