Ultimate is commonly counted as having 89 playable character identities. Nintendo’s official fighter list, however, ends at number 82. The difference comes from how a “character” is counted: Nintendo numbers roster entries under its stated rules, while expanded counts separate some identities that share a slot.
Why are the totals 82 and 89?
| Total | What it counts | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 82 | Nintendo’s numbered fighter entries, ending with Sora at number 82. Nintendo says its count includes Echo Fighters and counts Pokémon Trainer as one character. | Nintendo’s official fighter list and Nintendo’s roster-counting note |
| 89 | An expanded count of distinct playable identities, using a secondary roster-counting convention that separates some identities controlled through shared roster entries. | SmashWiki’s character count |
So, if you mean the number printed beside the final fighter on Nintendo’s list, the answer is 82. If you mean the commonly cited expanded total of playable identities, the answer is 89. Nintendo does not present 89 as the headline total on its official list.

What does Nintendo count as one fighter?
Nintendo’s official features page states: “Pokémon Trainer counts as one; number includes Echo Fighters.” That means the official numbering is not simply a count of every distinct playable identity a player might name. Shared roster arrangements and Nintendo’s stated rules affect the total.

Nintendo’s support information distinguishes the two Fighters Passes: the first covers Challenger Packs 1–5 and does not include Piranha Plant, while Fighters Pass Vol. 2 provides access to six Challenger Packs. Those pack counts describe DLC content, not the game’s total fighter count. Nintendo support: Fighters Pass details
