You need 10 eligible weapon skins of identical quality for a documented Trade Up Contract. It consumes those 10 items and gives you one item of the next highest quality. Valve’s rule comes from its CS:GO-era release notes; the current game is branded Counter-Strike 2, and the live CS2 contract flow has not been verified here.
Trade-up contract requirements
- Inputs: 10 eligible weapon skins.
- Quality: All 10 must be of identical quality; you cannot combine items of different qualities to meet the count.
- Output: One item of the next highest quality.
These are the terms in Valve’s May 14, 2014 release notes, which state that the contract exchanges 10 items of identical quality for one item of the next highest quality.
Can the 10 skins come from different collections?
Yes, under Valve’s later documented rule, the inputs do not all have to come from one collection. The output comes from a collection represented by at least one of the submitted items. In other words, mixing collections is allowed, but it does not remove the requirement that all 10 inputs have identical quality.
This differs from Valve’s September 12, 2013 announcement, which described exchanging 10 same-quality items from a specific collection. Valve’s May 2014 notes later said the contract no longer restricted inputs to a single collection, so the 2014 rule is the relevant documented rule.

Does this apply to Counter-Strike 2?
Valve’s official site now presents Counter-Strike 2 as the current Counter-Strike game, but the specific contract count and mechanics cited here are from CS:GO-era release notes. Valve’s September 23, 2026 update does not discuss trade-up contracts. The sources establish Valve’s documented rule, but do not independently confirm the contract interface or whether any mechanic has changed in the current live CS2 build.
Valve describes weapon skins as finishes applied to weapons in its Weapon Finishes Guide. For the trade-up count, the practical answer remains 10 matching-quality items; do not infer current interface steps from the older announcements.
