The rule applies to the Europe edition; it should not be assumed to apply to every Ticket to Ride map.
How many stations does each player get?
The official Ticket to Ride: Europe rules supply each player with three station pieces and limit them to three stations for the whole game. You can build no more than one station on a turn.
What does a station do?
A station lets its owner use one route belonging to another player that leads into or out of the station’s city. This can help connect cities listed on your destination tickets, but it does not transfer ownership of the borrowed route. If the same borrowed route helps complete several destination tickets, it can be used for all of them.
What does it cost to build stations?
- The first station costs one train card of any color.
- The second costs two train cards of the same color.
- The third costs three train cards of the same color.
Locomotive cards may be used as substitutes under the station rules. A player may build a station only if it is placed in a city.

Should you build all three?
No. Each station you leave unplayed is worth four points at the end of the game. Building one can help complete destination tickets, but it costs cards and gives up that end-game value. Consider whether the borrowed route is necessary for your tickets before spending cards; you can keep a station in reserve if you do not need it.
Does this limit apply to every Ticket to Ride game?
This three-station limit is established for Ticket to Ride: Europe. Days of Wonder identifies the original Ticket to Ride as a North America route-building game, while the station details cited here come from the Europe rulebook. Check the rules for the specific map or edition you are playing rather than carrying Europe’s station rule over to the whole series. See the publisher’s pages for Ticket to Ride: Europe and the original Ticket to Ride.
