The Elder Scrolls Online and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion are conventionally placed about 748 years apart: the commonly cited dates are 2E 582 for ESO and 3E 433 for Oblivion, a difference of 315 years to the end of the Second Era plus 433 years of the Third Era.
How the 748-year calculation works
A commonly cited community timeline places ESO in 2E 582 and Oblivion in 3E 433. The Second Era ends in 2E 897, so the calculation is 897 − 582 = 315 years to the era boundary, then 433 years into the Third Era: 315 + 433 = 748. This compares year labels across eras; it does not measure the exact elapsed time between specific dates in the games. ESO forum timeline
Why the figure is approximate
The exact ESO year is not established by the official era overview. ESO Support places the game in the Interregnum, between the end of the Second Empire in 2E 430 and the founding of the Third Empire in 2E 897 (3E 1), and describes it as 1,000 years before Skyrim; it does not specify 2E 582. ESO Support: When does The Elder Scrolls Online take place?
A discussion on the official ESO forums also considers 2E 583 as a possible dating. Using 2E 583 instead of 2E 582 makes the year-label difference 747 years. The 748-year answer is therefore conventional, not a precise day-to-day interval. ESO forum discussion: What year does ESO take place in?

How Bethesda’s “800 years before” wording fits
Bethesda described the Gates of Oblivion storyline as taking place “800 years before” the events of Oblivion. That wording refers to the year-long Gates storyline, not a precise date for every ESO chapter. It is rounded promotional framing, while the commonly cited 2E 582 and 3E 433 year labels yield 748 years. Bethesda.net: Introducing The Elder Scrolls Online: Blackwood & the Gates of Oblivion
