Those are conditional estimates, not guarantees for a typical lobby.
Why the trainer count varies
Primal Groudon is a Ground- and Fire-type raid boss, making Water attacks its key weakness. Trainer count depends on how much damage each team can deal and how long its Pokémon stay in the battle. Counter choices, moves, levels, and the boss’s moves all matter. The estimates below do not share one published set of battle assumptions, so they should not be treated as a direct, apples-to-apples ranking.

Practical recommendation: five or more
Pokémon GO Hub’s July 10, 2026 Primal Groudon raid guide recommends five or more high-level trainers, with more advisable when players have less-developed counters. This is the safer target for a public group whose teams and battle conditions may vary.

The Pokémon GO Hub database, accessed in 2026, lists three trainers as the minimum and four to seven as optimal. GO Silph’s simulator gives a two-trainer estimate with optimal level-40-or-higher counters. Both are scenario-dependent models; neither establishes that an ordinary two- or three-person group will win.

Build around strong Water attackers
Because Primal Groudon is doubly weak to Water, prioritize powerful Water-type attackers and suitable Water moves. Pokémon GO Hub’s guide lists these among its strongest options:
- Primal Kyogre with Waterfall and Origin Pulse
- Mega Swampert with Water Gun and Hydro Cannon
- Shadow Kyogre with Waterfall and Surf
- Mega Gyarados with Waterfall and Aqua Tail
These are in-game team choices, not required purchases. If your group lacks strong counters or the listed moves, add trainers rather than relying on the smallest modeled estimate.

What happens if the group loses?
Niantic says raids can accommodate up to 20 trainers, and each trainer selects six Pokémon. If the group fails, players can rejoin the raid without spending another pass while that raid remains active. See Niantic’s raid battle instructions for the participation details.

In a Primal Raid, the boss has undergone Primal Reversion. Defeating it awards Primal Energy, but the encounter afterward is with Groudon’s standard form—not Primal Groudon. Niantic explains the format on its Primal Raids help page.
