For a practical baseline, Wizards of the Coast’s current beta bracket guidance says players should generally expect a game to reach at least nine turns in Bracket 1, eight in Bracket 2, six in Bracket 3, and four in Bracket 4 before a win or loss; Bracket 5 cEDH games can end on any turn. Those are expectations for the kind of experience each bracket describes—not guaranteed minimums or predictions for every game.
Expected turns by Commander bracket
Wizards of the Coast’s October 21, 2025 beta bracket update presents these numbers as a guide to when players would be satisfied if a game ended. Wizards explicitly says this does not mean every game will end then. The figures are therefore bracket expectations, not measured averages across all Commander games.
| Bracket | Wizards’ expected game length | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| 1 — Exhibition | At least nine turns | A slower, theme-focused experience; nine turns is an expectation, not a guarantee. |
| 2 — Core | At least eight turns | A general expectation for the bracket, not a hard floor for every game. |
| 3 — Upgraded | At least six turns | A shorter expected game than in the lower brackets, but still not a promise. |
| 4 — Optimized | At least four turns | A fast, lethal, consistent environment where an early finish is expected. |
| 5 — cEDH | Can end on any turn | The guidance sets no minimum expected turn count. |
These bracket descriptions help answer what a table expects, but they do not establish one official average for Commander as a whole. Wizards’ basic Commander format page describes the format, while the October 21, 2025 beta update supplies the turn guidance.
What tracked games say about turns and time
Playgroup.gg’s game-tracking page reports different results for multiplayer games and duels. Its current figures, accessed October 8, 2026, cover games recorded through that service; they are not a representative estimate for every Commander table. The service excludes abandoned games under its measurement rules.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|

Playgroup.gg calls these counts “rounds,” so they should not be silently read as individual player turns. A multiplayer pod cycles through more players between one player’s turns, and elapsed time also depends on decision-making and board complexity. A round count and a duration answer different questions: the first describes progress through the game, while the second tells you how long the tracked game took. See Playgroup.gg’s tracked game statistics for its figures and definitions.
Why there is no single average Commander turn count
The available figures describe different things: Wizards publishes expectations by bracket, and Playgroup.gg reports rounds and elapsed time from games tracked on its service. Neither establishes a population-wide average number of turns across all Commander games. Bracket, multiplayer versus duel, number of players, and how a source counts turns or rounds all affect what a number means.

Individual player logs can illustrate how much results vary, but they are not a substitute for representative data. One Reddit poster reported tracking 221 Commander games and an initial average of 7.72 turns, with games ranging from four to 13. The poster later clarified that the initial figure recorded the turn on which they personally won or lost, rather than a consistent measure of total game length. It should not be treated as a general Commander average. The Reddit report is an anecdote, not a population study.

If game length matters to your group, discuss it before shuffling up. The Commander Rules Committee explicitly includes “length of games” among the things players should talk about. It describes Rule Zero as a group discussion and consensus, not a unilateral change to the rules. A quick check can prevent one player expecting a long, theme-driven game from sitting down with a table seeking a fast finish.
