A standard Minecraft crop farm needs one water block for each 9×9 plot. Place it in the center, with farmland on the other 80 spaces. The water hydrates farmland up to four blocks away horizontally, diagonals included, as long as it is at the same height as the farmland or one block higher.
How to lay out a one-water-block farm
Build a 9×9 square and put the water in the middle. That leaves 80 spaces for farmland: four blocks outward from the water in every horizontal direction. The Minecraft Wiki’s crop-farming tutorial describes this standard layout.
- Mark a 9×9 area for the plot.
- Place one water block at the center.
- Prepare the remaining 80 spaces as farmland and plant crops.
Water can be still or flowing in this layout. Keep the farmland at the same level as the water or one block below it; the Minecraft Wiki’s tips and tricks tutorial likewise describes hydration reaching four blocks in every direction, including diagonally. Minecraft’s Block of the Week: Farmland also advises keeping planting beds no more than four blocks from water.
Why the water reaches the whole plot
Hydration is measured horizontally: each farmland block must be within four blocks of water. A centered source covers the corners as well as the sides of the 9×9 footprint, so the plot does not need additional water blocks. The water position itself is not farmland, which is why the layout has 80 farmland spaces rather than 81.

Making a larger field
For a larger farm, repeat the 9×9 arrangement or otherwise place water so every farmland block remains within four horizontal blocks of it and satisfies the height condition. The key is coverage, not a fixed water-to-field ratio: a layout that leaves farmland beyond that reach will not hydrate every block.
What hydration changes
Hydrated farmland supports faster crop growth. Crops can still grow on dry farmland, but more slowly, so water is useful for speeding up a crop plot rather than an absolute requirement for crops to grow.

Keep the center water from becoming a hazard
Covering the water can help prevent players from falling into it and trampling farmland while jumping out. This is a practical safety measure, not a requirement for hydration.
