There is no official fixed count, but five broad methods can light a Nether portal: flint and steel, a fire charge, a ghast or blaze fireball, fire spreading from nearby flammable blocks, or lightning. Every method works by causing fire to appear inside a valid obsidian frame.
What counts as a way to light a portal?
The game checks for fire inside a completed, valid Nether portal frame. The item or event that produces the fire is the means of ignition, so the methods can be grouped in more than one way. Counting a ghast and a blaze fireball together as one projectile method gives five broad approaches; counting the two mob sources separately gives six.

The five broad methods
1. Use flint and steel
Use flint and steel to create fire at the frame. It is a direct, repeatable option when you have the tool.
2. Use a fire charge
A fire charge can also create the fire needed inside the frame. Like flint and steel, it is a straightforward way to ignite the portal; unlike the tool, it is a consumable.

3. Let a ghast or blaze fireball hit the frame
A ghast or blaze projectile can start fire in the frame. This is a situational alternative rather than a controlled substitute for carrying an ignition item.
4. Spread fire from nearby flammable blocks
Place lava near flammable blocks and allow fire to spread until it appears inside the frame. The portal activates only when the required fire is in the frame.

5. Use lightning
A lightning strike can create the needed fire. Because you cannot reliably control where or when lightning strikes, treat this as an opportunistic method.
Which method should you try first?

If you are stuck in the Nether
If you have neither flint and steel nor a fire charge, the alternatives depend on your surroundings and what you can obtain. One possible rescue is to bait a ghast into firing at the portal frame. You can also search structure chests for flint and steel or a fire charge, or craft a fire charge from materials available in the Nether. These options are less predictable than carrying an ignition item.

- Check that the frame is complete and valid before trying to ignite it.
- Use regular obsidian; crying obsidian is not a replacement for portal-frame obsidian.
- Make sure the fire appears inside the frame. Fire in or near an incomplete frame will not make the structure activate later just because the frame is completed afterward.
