The 2026 MLB postseason has 12 teams: six from each league. The ALDS is a best-of-five series, so a team must win three games to advance. The higher seed hosts Games 1 and 2 and, if needed, Game 5; the lower seed hosts Games 3 and 4.
How the 2026 MLB postseason bracket is set
Each league sends six teams to the postseason: its three division champions and three Wild Card teams. The two division champions with the best regular-season records in each league earn a bye into the Division Series. The other four teams play in the Wild Card round.
Wild Card Series matchups
In each league, the No. 3 seed faces No. 6, and No. 4 faces No. 5. Both series are best-of-three, with every game hosted by the higher seed. The bracket stays fixed after this round: MLB does not reseed teams based on their results.
- The No. 1 seed plays the winner of the No. 4-versus-No. 5 series.
- The No. 2 seed plays the winner of the No. 3-versus-No. 6 series.

What the ALDS format means
The ALDS is one of two American League Division Series. It is a best-of-five: the first team to win three games advances. That means an ALDS can end after three, four or five games; five games are not guaranteed.
The two ALDS winners move on to the American League Championship Series (ALCS), a best-of-seven round. The ALCS winner advances to the best-of-seven World Series.

What 2-2-1 means for ALDS home games
The higher seed has home-field advantage in a 2-2-1 arrangement:
- Games 1 and 2: hosted by the higher seed.
- Games 3 and 4: hosted by the lower seed, if the series lasts that long.
- Game 5: hosted by the higher seed, if the series is tied 2-2.

What changed over time
The Division Series began in 1995 after MLB realigned to three divisions per league. The postseason path has changed since then. 2026 dates are season-specific
MLB’s 2026 schedule announcement lists Saturday, October 10, 2026, as a possible date for ALDS Game 5s. That is a calendar possibility, not a guaranteed game date: a series that ends in three or four games will not need a fifth. Check MLB’s current schedule for confirmed dates and broadcast details.
