MLB’s public information establishes an eligibility path and publishes postseason crew assignments, but it does not disclose the complete formula for choosing which umpires work each playoff series. Qualified Minor League umpires may receive Major League call-up assignments; umpires hired full-time by MLB are eligible for All-Star and World Series games. The league then announces crews by postseason round, often naming each crew chief.
How umpires become eligible for postseason assignments
MLB describes a development route that begins with umpire camps and an invitation-only prospect development camp. Candidates are evaluated by umpire development staff, enter Minor League Baseball, and may advance through levels based on performance and potential. MLB also says qualified Minor League umpires can be offered Major League assignments as call-up umpires for Spring Training and regular-season games. Call-ups may be offered full-time MLB status based on availability. MLB says full-time Major League umpires are eligible for All-Star and World Series assignments. MLB’s umpire information describes this path, but does not give a postseason scoring rubric.
How MLB announces playoff crews
MLB publishes dated announcements identifying postseason crews and their series assignments. Its 2026 Wild Card and Division Series announcements name crew chiefs and specify the series each group will work. Those releases show the assignments, not the criteria used to make them.
The rounds include the Wild Card Series, Division Series, League Championship Series (LCS), and World Series. An umpire’s assignment to one round does not, based on the announcements alone, establish a general rule for advancement to another round.

Why some crews have seven umpires
For the 2025 LCS, MLB announced a seven-umpire crew for each league. MLB explained: “Placing seven umpires on each LCS crew allows for distinct home plate assignments in a potential seven-game series, with one umpire off the field in each game.” The crew size enables a different umpire to work home plate in each game of a seven-game series while one crew member is off the field.
MLB’s 2023 World Series announcement described the same seven-person rotation rationale for that Fall Classic. It also reported that all seven umpires assigned to the World Series had worked the Division Series that postseason. These are examples of the arrangements announced for those specific years, not evidence that every round or every season uses the same crew size or progression.

Who picks the umpires, and what criteria are public?
The public sources identify MLB as the league announcing the assignments. They describe evaluation in the development pipeline, including yearlong evaluation and temporary Major League opportunities for Triple-A umpires, but do not set out a complete postseason selection formula.
The announcements reviewed do not specify postseason rankings, performance thresholds, a seniority formula, geographic balancing, or a team-conflict policy. It would therefore be speculation to infer those rules from an umpire’s tenure or from who received an assignment in a particular year. The documented distinction is between becoming eligible for Major League postseason work and being selected for a specific crew and series; the detailed selection criteria are not publicly stated in these sources.
