Mobile games do not have one predictable effect on students’ grades. Educational games used in lessons are a different kind of activity from recreational gaming that becomes difficult to control or interferes with schoolwork. Research links problematic gaming with poorer academic performance, but it does not establish that gaming alone causes lower grades—or that a particular number of hours is safe.
Do mobile games affect students’ grades?
It depends on what kind of gaming is being measured and how it fits into a student’s life. Studies of problematic gaming—patterns associated with difficulty controlling play or interference with other activities—often find a negative relationship with grades. That is not the same as showing that ordinary mobile-game play lowers academic performance.

A systematic review by Alanood Khalid D. Alzahrani and Mark D. Griffiths examined 27 empirical studies of problematic gaming and student academic performance. Twenty-four reported a negative relationship with grades or GPA. The review was published online on 10 June 2024 and appeared in volume 23 (2025) of the journal. Its subject was problematic gaming broadly, not mobile games alone, so its findings should not be treated as a mobile-specific estimate. Read the review.
The count of studies reporting a negative relationship is not a count of studies proving that gaming caused poor grades. Most studies were cross-sectional, meaning they measured gaming and academic outcomes at roughly the same time. Grades and GPA are useful outcomes, but they do not capture every part of academic ability or functioning.

Does gaming lower grades, or do students with lower grades game more?
The direction of the relationship is unresolved. Of the 27 studies in the Alzahrani and Griffiths review, only five used longitudinal designs that followed students over time. Two found that problematic gaming predicted poorer academic performance; three did not find that it predicted later performance. The review also describes evidence that lower academic performance may precede or predict problematic gaming. Both directions, or a reciprocal relationship, remain possible.
The authors caution that most reviewed studies could not determine the direction of the effect. Other limitations include the use of non-probability samples, self-reported information, and measures not originally designed to assess problematic gaming. Three-quarters of the included studies were conducted in Asian countries, which also limits how confidently the findings can be generalized to every student population. See the review’s discussion of study limitations.

Can educational mobile games improve learning?
Educational game use is a separate question from recreational play. A 2025 systematic review in TEM Journal included 22 articles on mobile digital games used in primary education and reported positive effects on academic performance, particularly through increased motivation and engagement. That result applies to educational games in the settings and age group covered by the review; it does not show that leisure gaming improves grades, or that the same effect applies to secondary-school or university students. Research on smartphones and video games can provide context, but it should not be mistaken for direct evidence about mobile games. A 2020 literature review of smartphone use and academic performance found that negative associations were common, particularly in studies using actual GPA. Its authors emphasized that those associations do not establish causation; smartphone use includes many activities beyond gaming. Read the smartphone-use review.

A 2025 meta-analysis examined technology-related factors across a combined evidence base of 124,166 students in 28 countries. It reported a small, statistically significant negative association between video-game playing and academic performance. Because the analysis also covered smartphone and social-media factors, its result is broader than mobile gaming and does not show that mobile games cause lower grades. Read the 2025 meta-analysis.

These sources do not establish a universal number of gaming hours that is safe or harmful for academic performance. A time cutoff would go beyond the evidence. A more useful question is whether play is interfering with schoolwork or other activities, or has become difficult for the student to control. The studies summarized here do not define a single screening rule or threshold that applies to every student.

- Players make their way from elementary school through college by reading story cards that ask them to infer something about the text.
- Improve reading comprehension skills
- Reading level 3.5-5.0
- 2-6 players
- Grades 3-5
It is also important not to treat hours played as equivalent to problematic gaming. The review evidence concerns problematic gaming broadly, while studies vary in how they measure gaming and academic outcomes. A student’s grades may be affected by multiple circumstances, and the available evidence does not settle whether gaming is a cause, a consequence, or both.
