Cellucor’s current C4 Original product page lists 200 mg of caffeine per serving. The manufacturer says to mix one scoop with 6–8 fl oz of water and drink it 20–30 minutes before training; beginners may start with half a scoop. An older Cellucor C4 Original page lists 150 mg per serving, so the only reliable answer for your tub is the Supplement Facts panel on that exact container. “C4” is a family of products, not one universal formula.
The short answer: check the exact C4 label
If you have the current C4 Original formula, plan on 200 mg of caffeine per serving, according to Cellucor’s current product page (accessed 2026). If your container follows the older formulation, it may provide 150 mg. Those numbers are not interchangeable: a full scoop of the older powder and a full scoop of the current powder can deliver different caffeine doses.

Cellucor’s current use direction is one scoop mixed with 6–8 fl oz of water, consumed 20–30 minutes before a workout. The same page says beginners can start with half a scoop. An archived C4 Original page instead specifies one level scoop in 6 fl oz of water, also 20–30 minutes before training. Follow the directions printed on your container when they differ from a web page.
| What you have | Caffeine listed per serving | Mixing direction shown by Cellucor | Timing shown by Cellucor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Current C4 Original product page | 200 mg | 1 scoop in 6–8 fl oz water; beginners may start with ½ scoop | 20–30 minutes before a workout |
| Archived C4 Original product page | 150 mg | 1 level scoop in 6 fl oz water | 20–30 minutes before training |
These are manufacturer statements, not independent laboratory measurements or results from a clinical trial of C4 itself. Formula changes can leave older online descriptions out of step with a package currently being sold.

Why “How much caffeine is in C4?” has more than one answer
C4 is a product family. Original, Sport, Extreme, Ultimate and other variants have had different stimulant blends and serving amounts. Even within C4 Original, the current web page and an archived page disagree: 200 mg versus 150 mg per serving. The available Cellucor pages do not establish exactly when the change occurred or which production lots used each formula.
That discrepancy is why a search snippet, an old review or a friend’s scoop measurement cannot identify the dose in your container. Find the Supplement Facts panel, identify the product name and serving size, and use the caffeine amount printed there. Treat a scoop as a serving only if the label says it is; scoop volume and serving weight can change between formulas.
Historical comparison of C4 variants
Cellucor’s comparison article, published approximately in 2021, illustrates how widely the line has varied. It reported the following caffeine amounts:

The table is useful for showing that “C4” does not identify one caffeine dose. It should not be used to infer the contents of a product currently on a store shelf. Check the exact variant, flavor and label version you own.
How to verify the caffeine in your container
- Read the front label. Record the full product name, such as C4 Original or another variant. Do not rely on the word “C4” alone.
- Find Supplement Facts. Look for the serving size and the line that identifies caffeine, usually expressed in milligrams per serving.
- Check the serving instruction. Confirm whether one serving is one scoop, a level scoop or another measured amount. A heaped scoop can exceed the labeled serving.
- Compare the label with the current directions. If your tub lists 150 mg while a current web page lists 200 mg, use the tub’s label for that product and lot.
- Record the dose before combining stimulants. Write down the C4 amount and add caffeine from coffee, tea, energy drinks, soda, gels or medicines consumed that day.
If the panel is damaged, unreadable or missing, do not guess from a historical chart. Contact the manufacturer or replace the container with one whose label is clear.
When should you take C4 before a workout?
For C4 Original, Cellucor’s current recommendation is 20–30 minutes before exercise. Mix one scoop with 6–8 fl oz of water. If you are new to pre-workout products, the current page says you may begin with half a scoop, which also reduces the caffeine exposure compared with a full serving.

- Choose the serving from your label. Use the container’s stated scoop size and caffeine amount.
- Measure the powder. Use a level scoop unless the package specifies another measure. Do not assume that a scoop from a different C4 variant is equivalent.
- Mix with the labeled water volume. The current Original direction is 6–8 fl oz; the archived direction is 6 fl oz.
- Schedule the drink 20–30 minutes before training. This is the manufacturer’s suggested interval, not a proven optimum for every person, workout or meal schedule.
- Adjust only from the label and your response. Beginners can use the half-scoop option stated on the current page. Do not take additional scoops simply because you do not immediately feel a stimulant effect.
People absorb and clear caffeine at different rates. A meal, body size, sleep debt, regular caffeine use and individual metabolism can change how quickly the effect is noticed. The 20–30-minute instruction should therefore be treated as a practical starting point rather than a guarantee that the product will feel strongest at a precise minute.

How C4 fits into your daily caffeine total
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says, “For most adults, the FDA has cited 400 milligrams* a day … as an amount not generally associated with negative effects.” That is broad population guidance, not a target and not a promise that 400 mg is safe or comfortable for every individual. The FDA also notes substantial variation in caffeine sensitivity and elimination.
Count the caffeine in the entire day, not only the pre-workout scoop. For example, a current 200 mg C4 Original serving plus a 150 mg coffee equals 350 mg before counting any tea, soda, chocolate, energy product or medicine. A 150 mg C4 serving combined with the same coffee equals 300 mg. These arithmetic totals do not predict how you will feel; they simply prevent you from overlooking other sources.

- Use the caffeine number on each product’s label where one is provided.
- Remember that “one serving” can mean different scoop sizes across C4 variants.
- Do not treat the FDA’s 400 mg reference as permission to increase your dose.
- Reduce or avoid caffeine if you are unusually sensitive or have previously experienced an unpleasant response.
People who are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding, or who have a medical condition or take medicines that may interact with caffeine should ask a qualified health professional for individualized advice. The FDA specifically encourages consultation in those circumstances.

Caffeine taken late can interfere with sleep even when you no longer feel energized. A 2013 study in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine tested 400 mg of caffeine at bedtime, three hours before bedtime and six hours before bedtime. All three timings produced significant sleep disturbance compared with placebo. The authors concluded that “The magnitude of reduction in total sleep time suggests that caffeine taken 6 hours before bedtime has important disruptive effects on sleep.”
That study used 400 mg, which is more than one serving of the current C4 Original page (200 mg) and more than the archived 150 mg amount. It therefore does not establish a universal cutoff for C4, nor does it show that every person will react identically to a smaller serving. It does support caution with afternoon and evening use.

A practical late-workout check
- Write down your planned C4 dose from the container.
- Note your intended bedtime and the time you would drink the pre-workout.
- Consider all other caffeine consumed that day.
- If you routinely have trouble falling asleep, wake during the night or feel unrefreshed, move the workout earlier or use less caffeine rather than assuming the problem is unrelated.
There is no evidence here for a single “safe” number of hours that works for everyone. Your own sleep response is an important signal, and persistent sleep problems warrant medical advice.
What to do if the dose feels too strong
Do not add another scoop to chase a delayed sensation. Stop using the product for that session if you feel unwell, and seek urgent medical help for severe or alarming symptoms. For ordinary sensitivity concerns, review the label, calculate the day’s total and discuss a lower-caffeine approach with a health professional.
The current C4 Original page explicitly offers half a scoop for beginners. That option is tied to the current product directions; do not assume that half a scoop of every C4 variant has the same caffeine amount. If your tub gives a different instruction, follow that package or contact Cellucor for clarification.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using an old number: 150 mg appears on an archived Original page, while the current page lists 200 mg.
- Confusing variants: historical figures range from 135 mg for Sport to 300 mg for Ultimate.
- Ignoring serving size: one scoop is not automatically one serving across products.
- Double-counting the label incorrectly: calculate caffeine per serving, then multiply only by the number of servings actually taken.
- Forgetting non-supplement sources: coffee, tea, energy drinks, soda, chocolate and some medicines can contribute to the daily total.
- Assuming timing is universal: 20–30 minutes is Cellucor’s direction, not a guarantee of identical effects for every user.
Bottom line for C4 users
For the current C4 Original listing, the answer is 200 mg of caffeine per serving, taken in 6–8 fl oz of water 20–30 minutes before training; beginners may start with half a scoop. Because an archived Original page lists 150 mg and other C4 variants have historically ranged from 135 mg to 300 mg, read your own Supplement Facts panel before measuring. Add every other caffeine source to your daily total, keep late workouts in view, and consult a health professional if pregnancy, breastfeeding, a medical condition, medicines or unusual sensitivity applies.
