Movies present a fixed sequence of images and sounds; games can make a player’s actions, exploration, and encounters with rules part of the storytelling. So adapting the same story between them means reshaping how it is told—not simply transferring every scene intact.
What changes when a story moves between a movie and a game?
The central difference is the audience’s role. A film presents a sequence selected and arranged by its creators. Viewers can interpret what they see, but they cannot alter the order of scenes or decide whether a character enters a room. A game can ask a player to move through a space, take an action, manage a resource, or make a choice. Those activities may contribute to the story’s meaning as well as its plot.

That distinction is not a simple divide between passive movies and interactive games. Watching a film involves active interpretation; playing a game can involve long stretches of directed, non-branching action. The useful question is what the medium asks its audience to do, and how that experience carries the story. Adaptation studies discuss these changes in form and relationship between media, rather than treating adaptation as a scene-by-scene copying exercise. Oxford Academic’s chapter on videogame adaptation provides a scholarly framework for thinking about those differences.

Turning a game into a film or series means selecting and arranging material for a fixed screen experience. Turning a film into a game means finding actions and systems that make the source’s world playable. In either direction, a change is not automatically a failure of fidelity: it may be the way the new medium makes the story work.

How do audience agency and interaction change?
In a movie, the filmmakers decide what the audience sees, when it sees it, and how long a moment lasts. The viewer may anticipate a reveal or reinterpret an earlier scene, but cannot change the characters’ immediate actions. A game can give the player some control over movement, timing, tactics, or decisions. That control may affect events—or it may shape the experience of getting through events that remain fixed.
Agency varies widely. Some games offer branching decisions that alter later scenes; others tell a largely linear story while letting players control navigation, combat, or other activities. It is misleading to say that a game adaptation must provide multiple endings or let the player rewrite the plot. Interactivity can live in the process of reaching a scene, in the effort required to succeed, or in the opportunity to examine a setting at the player’s pace.
Research on adaptations of Hamlet considers how videogame interactivity and player agency relate to a story originally shaped for another medium. The relevant question is not merely whether a player can change the ending. It is how the game’s actions and rules affect the player’s relationship to the material. The 2020 study in Arts is one example of scholarship examining that problem.
A movie version of a game usually removes the audience’s direct control over the protagonist. That can narrow one kind of participation, but it also lets a director control attention precisely: a cut can reveal a threat, withhold information, or place two characters in parallel scenes. The adaptation has to find a screen equivalent for experiences that were partly produced by the player’s actions, if those experiences matter to the story.
How does viewpoint affect what the audience knows?
Games often give players access to story through the character they control, but the player’s view is not necessarily identical to that character’s knowledge. A player may see a room from a particular camera angle, inspect an object, or move away from the path a character would take in a tightly edited film. This creates options for curiosity and discovery, but it can also restrict access to events happening elsewhere.

A screen adaptation can choose a different viewpoint. It can show what another character is doing while the game protagonist is absent, establish context before a playable encounter, or linger on a reaction that a player might have moved past. That does not necessarily mean the adaptation is explaining more or improving on the game. It changes the boundary of the audience’s knowledge and can shift sympathy, suspense, or emphasis.
Craig Mazin, co-creator and showrunner of the television adaptation of The Last of Us, discussed the creative possibilities of moving beyond the game protagonist’s perspective in an interview with PBS and Austin PBS. Seeing events differently can give a screen version room to develop material that the game does not show directly. The same choice can also alter the effect of a scene: a player’s uncertainty may become a viewer’s foreknowledge, or a background event may become a central dramatic beat.

Point of view is therefore more than a camera or a playable character. It is a decision about whose experience anchors a moment, which information is available, and what the audience must infer. When comparing versions, ask what a new viewpoint makes legible and what it changes about the original encounter.
Why do pacing and scale change?
A game’s duration includes more than its story scenes. Players may travel, explore, repeat a difficult section, experiment with tools, or spend time on optional activities. A film has to arrange a selected sequence of events into a screen work with its own rhythm. A series has more room for episodes, but still requires decisions about which events deserve screen time and how to shape each installment.
This makes condensing a game more complicated than deleting a few side quests. A section that seems like an obstacle to the plot may be where the player learns a rule, builds tension through repetition, or understands the cost of a character’s actions. If a film skips that activity, it may need a different way to establish the same relationship or consequence. Conversely, a scene that takes only moments in a game may need more room on screen if the adaptation wants viewers to understand what is at stake.

Sydney King, a senior writer in Blizzard’s Story & Franchise Development group, described the problem of carrying extensive game experiences into a movie in Activision Blizzard’s discussion of how movies and games influence each other. King pointed to both fans’ expectations and the limited time available to a movie. That tension helps explain why a screen version may combine events, omit material, or focus on a smaller part of the source.
Pacing also changes because the audience does not control a movie’s tempo. A game can leave a player alone in an environment for as long as they choose, though the game’s design sets the available space and activities. A film can create a comparable pause through a shot, sound, or cut, but the pause has a duration chosen by the filmmakers. The screen version’s job is not to reproduce the number of minutes a player spent in a location; it is to decide what that time was doing and how to create a meaningful effect in a fixed sequence.
What should an adaptation keep, change, or leave out?
There is no universal checklist of scenes that an adaptation must preserve. The relevant choices depend on what makes the source distinctive and what the new medium needs to do. A creator might keep a central relationship while changing the order of events, preserve a setting while replacing a sequence of missions, or expand a brief encounter into a sustained scene. Each choice should be judged by its purpose and consequences, not by the number of details copied.
Sony Interactive Entertainment describes The Last of Us and Gran Turismo as contrasting adaptation situations: their source material presents different opportunities and calls for different strategies. In its PlayStation Productions article, the company expresses the principle this way: “It’s all about using the source material as inspiration versus as a rule book.” The point is not that creators should disregard the source. It is that fidelity can mean carrying forward a story’s identity or emotional purpose rather than following every plot beat literally.
It helps to separate several kinds of continuity. An adaptation may preserve the same characters but give them different actions, retain a key event but change how the audience encounters it, or keep the world’s rules while inventing a new plot. It can also reproduce many visible details while changing the experience those details supported. Asking which level of the source remains important makes discussion of fidelity more precise.

- Events: Which turning points are essential to the version’s dramatic shape, and which can be moved, merged, or removed?
- Characters: Are their goals and relationships carried over, even if some actions or scenes change?
- Viewpoint: Does the adaptation preserve what the audience knows and when, or deliberately alter it?
- Experience: If the source made an event meaningful through player action, what does the new medium use in its place?
- World and tone: Does the adaptation retain the setting’s rules and atmosphere, or create a different interpretation?
These questions also make room for trade-offs. A film that removes a lengthy playable sequence may gain pace but lose the time a player spent inhabiting the situation. A game that adds exploration to a film’s world may offer a richer sense of place while changing how quickly the plot advances. Neither effect alone settles whether the adaptation succeeds; the key is whether the change serves a coherent experience.

A film already supplies a sequence of scenes. A game adaptation can reproduce some of that sequence, but it also has to decide what the player does between or during those scenes. Simply showing the plot in interactive form does not by itself create a satisfying game. The adaptation needs a playable structure: actions, rules, spaces, goals, or challenges that give the player a role in the world.
That structure does not need to make the player the film’s protagonist or give them control over every outcome. It can let players take part in events that were only glimpsed on screen, explore places the film established, or engage with the setting through a new mission. The design question is how play relates to the story: does it retell events, fill gaps, extend the world, or use the source’s premise to create a different experience?
A Bond University research record on film-to-game adaptation uses the concept of transmediality—the movement of material between media—and points to examples including GoldenEye 007, Blade Runner, The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, and LEGO adaptations. Its discussion highlights narrative form, worldbuilding, seriality, and what it calls interactivation as useful ways to think about the process. The Bond University record supports a broader view than plot reproduction: a game can adapt the potential of a film’s world into something players can act within.
Different design choices create different relationships to the movie. A game built around recognizable scenes may emphasize reenactment. A game that adds locations or incidents can expand the world, but risks making the movie’s story feel secondary. A game that builds its own playable conflict from the setting may be less literal yet more fully designed around the medium. The adaptation’s form tells players what kind of relationship to expect: retelling, extension, exploration, or reimagining.

How can you tell whether a change is successful?
Start by identifying the source’s effect, not just its plot information. Did a sequence create suspense by limiting what the player could see? Did an environment invite exploration? Did a relationship develop through repeated shared actions? Did the film’s pacing depend on a tightly controlled reveal? Once the effect is clear, look for what the adaptation does to produce, replace, or intentionally abandon it.
A practical comparison can follow five steps:
- Identify the source medium’s contribution. Note what the source makes possible through player action, viewing order, duration, or controlled revelation.
- Locate the changed element. Compare a specific event, viewpoint, character beat, or stretch of time rather than judging the entire adaptation in the abstract.
- Ask what the change accomplishes. It may clarify motivation, make the story fit an episodic structure, introduce a new viewpoint, or give players meaningful activities.
- Name the cost. The change may remove uncertainty, reduce the audience’s control, compress a relationship, or shift attention away from a part of the source that mattered.
- Judge the result in its new form. Decide whether the changed version works as a film, series, or game—not only whether it matches a remembered sequence.
This method avoids two common shortcuts. The first is treating any omission as a betrayal, even when the source relies on experiences that cannot be carried over literally. The second is excusing every alteration as necessary just because the media differ. A change still needs a reason, and it can be evaluated by what the audience gains and loses.
Why is “faithful or not?” too narrow a question?
Faithfulness can refer to many things: keeping the plot, preserving characterization, reproducing a world, retaining a tone, or recreating an audience’s experience. Those goals can conflict. Preserving every event may leave no room for the new medium to tell the story effectively; changing the viewpoint may deepen one character’s role while diminishing the source’s uncertainty. A useful discussion says which kind of fidelity is at stake.

Movies and games also distribute meaning differently. A film can use editing, performance, sound, and composition to direct attention from moment to moment. A game can add rules and actions that make an idea felt through play, while environments may reward or invite investigation. A screen adaptation can translate a playable idea into a scene, but the translation changes who controls it and how it unfolds. A game adaptation can turn a film setting into an explorable place, but exploration may change the story’s rhythm or focus.
So compare versions by tracing the relationship between form and effect: what the original medium allowed, what the new one chooses to preserve, and what it invents to make the story work in its new form. That is more revealing than counting matching scenes.
