A fully charged, non-critical hit from a Sharpness V netherite sword deals 11 raw damage (5.5 hearts) in Java Edition or 15.25 raw damage (7.625 hearts) in Bedrock Edition to an unarmored target. Those figures are before armor and other damage modifiers; the edition changes the result.
Java Edition damage: 11 points
A netherite sword has 8 base damage in Java Edition. Sharpness V adds 3 damage, giving a total of 11 raw damage for a fully charged ordinary hit against an unarmored target. Since one heart equals 2 damage points, that is 5.5 hearts.
The Java Sharpness bonus is 1 damage at level I, increasing by 0.5 for each additional level. Critical hits use separate damage math: Sharpness damage is applied after the critical-hit multiplier, so a critical hit is not calculated by simply multiplying the full 11-point total.
Bedrock Edition damage: 15.25 points
A netherite sword has 9 base damage in Bedrock Edition. Sharpness adds 1.25 damage per level, so level V adds 6.25: 9 + 6.25 = 15.25 raw damage, or 7.625 hearts, before armor or other modifiers.

Why the damage can differ in a fight
The totals above describe a fully charged, non-critical hit on an unarmored target. Armor and resistance can reduce damage received, while critical hits, attack timing, and effects can change the result. They are not a guarantee that every swing removes the stated amount of health.
Java and Bedrock compared
| Edition | Netherite sword base damage | Sharpness V bonus | Total raw damage | Heart equivalent |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Java Edition | 8 | 3 | 11 | 5.5 |
| Bedrock Edition | 9 | 6.25 | 15.25 | 7.625 |
The exact figures are mechanics values documented by the Minecraft Wiki’s sword reference and Sharpness reference. Minecraft Help confirms that Sharpness increases weapon damage and lists its maximum level as V, but does not give the edition-specific formulas: Minecraft Help: All Enchantments in Minecraft. If a game update changes combat mechanics, check the reference for your edition and version.

Sharpness damage is not netherite durability
Mojang says netherite items hit harder than diamond equivalents and can be enchanted normally in its Netherite Ingot article. The article also compares how much total damage a sword can deal before breaking; that is a durability measure over the weapon’s lifetime, not damage from one hit.
