How much did it cost to make Fortnite? Epic Games has not published a definitive total, so the exact amount is unknown. Do you mean the original game, Battle Royale, or the continuing live service? Those are different scopes, and the public figures available do not establish a complete budget for any of them.
Why there is no single established cost
“Fortnite” can refer to the original Save the World project, the Battle Royale mode, or the game as an ongoing service with new content and platform support. A production budget through launch is not the same measure as the extra work to create Battle Royale, and neither includes a clearly defined lifetime of operating and content costs.

The available reporting and Epic material do not disclose a complete total for any of those scopes. A dollar estimate would need to define what it counts, when it stops, and how shared staff and technology are allocated; those accounting details are not established publicly in the sources cited here.
What the development timeline tells us
The original game came first
The News & Observer reports that Fortnite, now known as Save the World, had been in development for six years by the time Epic began its Battle Royale sprint. It was released on July 21, 2017. The News & Observer’s October 16, 2024 report also says Epic reused existing Fortnite material for Battle Royale and moved developers from Unreal Tournament to the project in July 2017.

Battle Royale was a short sprint, not the whole game
Battle Royale launched on September 26, 2017. PC Gamer’s account of an interview with former Epic publishing head Ed Zobrist describes roughly two months of development, mostly from July 25 to September 26. It says the decision to make Battle Royale free-to-play and separate from Save the World came in the final two weeks. That timeline concerns the mode’s sprint; it does not represent the six-year production of the original game. PC Gamer’s account of Zobrist’s interview
What Epic and former publishing head Ed Zobrist have said about cost
The News & Observer quotes Zobrist, Epic’s head of publishing from 2016 to 2021, saying of the original game: “It didn’t appeal to the mass market as I think Epic was hoping for, and maybe what we wanted, but it was enough to make the development budget back and then some.” The remark indicates that the original game earned back its development budget, but gives no budget amount.
Epic’s July 2017 update said Fortnite would eventually be free-to-play and described its direction this way: “This is a live service and we are here for the long haul.” That statement describes Epic’s intent, not its spending. Epic’s “Fortnite: The Road Ahead” update

Why broad online estimates are not a confirmed budget
Some explainers offer modeled ranges, but their results depend on assumptions about staffing, shared Epic resources, and whether they include marketing, infrastructure, and later live-service work. They are not Epic accounting figures, nor do they establish a verified production cost. GamingBible’s explainer likewise notes the lack of a definitive published total.

Without those choices and supporting accounting, a precise figure—or a range presented as fact—cannot be verified.
